A Mandate to End the War
Not a mandate for more wars
Antiwar.com
Nov 5 2008
Let’s be clear about the nature and meaning of the mandate we’re going to be hearing so much about: President-elect Barack Obama has a clear mandate to end the Iraq war as expeditiously as possible. His campaign was energized by and differentiated from Hillary Clinton’s by his emphasis on correcting that horrific mistake. Hillary equivocated, refused to recant her vote for war, and coyly suggested that we might withdraw only as far as Kurdistan. Obama, on the other hand, pledged to get us out in a year, albeit adding weasel words about “residual” forces guarding our bigger-than-the-Vatican ambassadorial compound. He gained his initial momentum by grabbing on to this issue and holding on for dear life, as the Clintons self-destructed and the economy did, too. Obama arrived at this moment not only on the strength of his pledge to end the present war, but also the implicit promise to refrain from involving us in any further hostilities. How McCain Could Win
Monday 03 November 2008
by: Greg Palast, t r u t h o u t | Perspective
It’s November 5 and the nation is in shock. Media blame it on the “Bradley effect”: Americans supposedly turned into Klansmen inside the voting booth, and Barack Obama turned up with 6 million votes less than calculated from the exit polls. Florida came in for McCain and so did Indiana. Colorado, despite the Democrats’ Rocky Mountain high after the Denver convention, stayed surprisingly Red. New Mexico, a state where Anglos are a minority, went McCain by 300 votes, as did Virginia.
That’s the nightmare. Here’s the cold reality. Read the rest of this entry »

The Age of Triumphalism is over
Americans are no longer in the mood to chase after distant evildoers.
By Andrew J. Bacevich LosAngelosTimes
October 26, 2008
All but lost amid the hullabaloo of the presidential campaign, the State Department recently dropped North Korea from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. Kim Jong Il pocketed a concession that even a year ago would have seemed unimaginable. The American people — feeling more threatened by Wall Street than by Pyongyang — managed barely a shrug. Trade, within a society and between countries, is the exchange of goods and services produced by human beings. The owners of the means of production appropriate the profits. As a class, they are the leaders of the capitalist state and they boast of fostering development and social wellbeing through market. This they worship as an infallible God. This article says more about the Orwellian world created by US imperialism than the imperialist Obama.

Instead of acting like journalists, the mainstream media have become McCain’s personal assistants, regurgitating his B.S. without question. Read the rest of this entry »

This, indeed, looks like the new Obama foreign as we seeit already unfolding under Bush. But, it has to said that it looks like utter fantasy, a wish list of targets from an ailing hegemon which looks destined to be checked at every stage by the diplomacy of Russia, South America, Iran, China and Africa; in short, by the movement of emerging and reemerging nations given such stimulus by US/UK aggression. Already, the latter are faltering in Zimbabwe, Sudan, Kosovo and Burma: the game is just too transparent. The shift is, after all, the result of military defeat in Iraq and Afghanistan, from which the allies are retreating whilst sounding the charge. We can expect retreat to turn into a rout over the next year as the US/UK financial system implodes and all and sundry jump ship leaving the oligarchy high and dry.
Looming Attack On Pakistan Spells Nuclear
Confrontations With China, Russia & Their Allies
Webster Tarpley
Rense.com
Washington, DC, July 17, 2008 — With the Bush regime sending a top State Department diplomat to sit down with Iranian officials, with signs that the US departure from Iraq may now be accelerated, and with Israel beginning to make deals with Hezbollah, some observers in this capital are beginning to celebrate Peace in Our Time in an outburst of midsummer euphoria. But this perspective is an illusion: the United States and NATO now escalating the hopeless and unwinnable Afghan war, and is preparing to send US and NATO forces on the ground to seize parts of Pakistan, a country which is almost 3 times more populous than Iran, and possesses a nuclear arsenal and the means to deliver it. The Bush-Cheney-neocon era in foreign policy is over, and the Brzezinski-Trilateral-Rockefeller-Soros phase of aggression has begun; the US hit list now features Chinese allies like Sudan, Zimbabwe, and Pakistan. Brzezinski is striving to put together some huge provocation for the Beijing Olympics, to make the Chinese government lose face and begin disintegrating. The ultimate targets of the new Obama-Brzezinski foreign policy are Russia, China, and the other members and friends of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the main pole of resistance in the world to the designs of Washington and London. The stakes are now much higher than a mere conventional clash in the Persian Gulf. Brzezinski’s adventurism goes far beyond that of the neocons, and objectively places the danger of a thermonuclear exchange on the world agenda. Watch for the Polish-Czech-Lithuanian missile crisis, a Balkan crisis, and a crisis between Georgia and Russia to point the world in this ominous new direction.
