The Pentagon’s model “judicial” system at Guantanamo Bay has many fascinating features, virtually all of which are contrary to the rights and guarantees in the federal system established by the Constitution. Among the features in the Pentagon’s system are a presumption of guilt for the accused, no right to confront witnesses, the use of hearsay evidence, the use of evidence acquired by torture or coercion, no right against self-incrimination, no protection against cruel and unusual punishments, no right to bail, and no right to trial by jury.

As Radovan Karadzic awaits trial on war crimes charges in The Hague, the world is once again remembering the victims of the war in Bosnia.
It’s more than a decade since a quarter of a million Serbs were forced to leave their homes in Croatia. And on the streets of Belgrade the wounds from the Yugoslav war are still raw.

We are seeing some remarkable, unexpected and positive developments: the Iraqi government is throwing off it’s subordination to the occupation, making deals with the various strands of the resistance and leaving the occupiers out in the cold. This development is another illustration of the advanced phase of imperial collapse we have now entered.

BAQUBA – A massive military operation in Diyala province has underscored the military and political gains by the Sahwa militia, despite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s earlier attempts to thwart them. Maliki has now apparently come around to involving the Sahwa rather than opposing them.

Colonel Arthur Anderson is the chief of human use and ethics at the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID), the bioweapons facility where Dr. Ivins worked and where the anthrax strains were apparently obtained by the anthrax killer.
