“The Bank of England is asleep at the wheel again, and we will be back to beleaguered banksters begging for bailouts – and the taxpayer will be ripped off yet again, but bigger this time.”
Bail-outs are no longer permitted under EU regulations, drawn up by Michel Barnier, bete noir of the Murdoch press, so it will be interesting how they play this one post Brexit. In any case, the people should take to the streets to oppose any bailouts!

Post hoc, ergo, propter hoc? Three days after the Brexit vote a report comes in of “democracy” protesters in Hong Kong waving union jacks. Actually, I don’t think the one caused the other. Rather they are both caused by the US foreign policy shift to containment of China which will dominate the next presidency rather than cold war with Russia.

It was once faith versus reason but now it’s identity versus reason and identity is winning hands down. Never mind that their relationship with China is a core economic interest for Australians, thev are prepared to jeopardise it on the basis of a pro-western, anglo-saxon identity.

The coup in Brazil bringing into question both the BRICS and Mercosur, Brexit and the dismissal of Osborne, the Conservative Party Human Rights Commission report on human rights in China, the Hague ruling on the South China Seas, the weakening of Australia-China ties, the renewed protests in Hong Kong including demands for secession: all these point to the policy of “containment” of China as the dominant theme of US foreign policy under the next presidency. Detente with Russia should be viewed within this context.

Prime Minister Therese May’s decision to delay approving a new nuclear power station partly funded by China at Hinkley Point may be an indication that she will soon be dismantling many of Cameron government’s policy plans. Hinkley Point being China’s first nuclear power project in the West, Beijing will lose its face if it is canceled.

It’s not just Brexit putting regional integration projects in question. Already after the coup in Brazil Mercosur’s future is being put in doubt by coup leader Temer:
“We need to rediscuss Mercosur at this moment, not to eliminate it, but to give us a safer position to seek to broaden our relations with other countries,” Temer said.
Which other countries might these be? Mercosur is negotiating a trade deal with the EU but that seemingly isn’t broad enough. Unsurprisingly, he is also blocking Venezuela’s upcoming presidency of Mercosur.
Then we have Trump’s wall effectively ending NAFTA, Australia bringing into question it’s partnership with China and it’s Asian future and the question of Hong Kong secession suddenly raised. We seem to be witnessing an emerging anglosphere which would look very much like Oceania in Orwell’s 1984.

Brexit is part of a general shift against rising Chinese influence. We see that in the Austrlia. Brazil and , of course, the UK. Next is Hong Kong. Last time the Cameron government, not wishing to disturb Anglo-Chinese relations, was fairly indifferent to the Freedom House protests in Hong Kong. This time we can expect the the British government’s response to be more proactive and provocative.
