A new paradigm for a post-imperial world

Spanish report on Ukraine

Posted by seumasach on February 24, 2014

This Spanish report will dismay the forces behind the coup in Ukraine. The worst thing that can happen to “opposition” of this type is taking power. especially on the back of armed insurrection. Here we learn that the Maidan gunmen want “new faces” who won’t as they see it betray Ukraine. They are not happy with the appointment of Turchinov and don’t want Tymoshenko. Turchinov himself is delirious calling on Ukraine to “renew the path of European integration”. This is a non-starter: can you imagine the EU taking in one of the world’s most backward economies of 45 million people. All the Europeans ever offered and ever will offer is a free trade deal backed by IMF loans whose conditions will destroy any government that accepts them. We are seeing an illegal government, brought to power through foreign intervention, held hostages to armed madmen following a purely imaginary political agenda. And all this in Europe with the approval of the EU. Surreal, astonishing!

Careful what you wish for in Ukraine

Posted by seumasach on February 24, 2014

“Russia most likely will adopt the same stance towards pro-European Union politicians that the Egyptian military and its Saudi backers took toward Egypt’s the Muslim Brotherhood: let the opposition take the blame for economic and social chaos, and then move in when the country is on its knees.”

It will now become obvious that all the stuff about Ukraine joining EU was nothing but a rouse. It succeeded in drawing protesters onto streets with EU flags but even if they can sideline the militants and restore some kind of order they will not be able to bail out Ukraine given they can barely bailout Greece, Spain etc. Any stable government in Ukraine will turn to Russia for aid by default. I believe this intervention aimed at a civil war as the Western media never ceased to suggest. Yanukovitch’s ceding of power could then have been the masterstroke. The hapless Ashton now heads to Ukraine in a state of blind panic.

Asia Times

Western governments are jubilant over the fall of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich, a Russian ally. They may be underestimating Vladimir Putin: Russia has the option to hasten Ukraine’s slide into chaos and wait until the hapless European Union acquiesces to – if not begs for – Russian intervention.

EU says Ukraine must preserve its unity

Posted by seumasach on February 23, 2014

The only way for Europe to defend “the rule of the law and the Constitution” is to condemn Friday’s coup d’etat. Having failed to condemn it they support it: the consequences of this for the European leadership and the rule of law in Europe are immense.

WSJ

22nd February, 2014

BRUSSELS—The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, called Saturday for the formation of an inclusive government in Ukraine and for all sides to safeguard the country’s unity.

“The European Union expects everyone in Ukraine to behave responsibly with a view to protect the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the country. I call on everyone to abide by the rule of the law and the Constitution,” said Catherine Ashton, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs.

Shadow of a NATO-Nazi gunman

Cailean Bochanan

23rd February, 2014

William Hague has decreed by twitter (for it is thus that the destiny of nations is settled) that he  and his opposite number Steinmeier have agreed to support “a new government” in Ukraine. Which new government would that be?: not the one Steinmeier signed an agreement with on Friday but, implicitly,  the armed insurrectionists who now hold power in Kiev. We’re used to Anglo-American contempt for international law but the Germans are meant to be sticklers for the rules. They haven’t done anything like this since allowing Vladimir Lenin to return to Moscow through Germany with, allegedly, a wad of cash on his person. Supporting a NATO-Nazi coup d’etat shows the Germans not to be the politically correct old fuddy-duddies they appear to be. And it won’t just be politically incorrect, it will be politically disastrous. Who set this trap for Europe’s soon to be defunct leadership? Putin and Obama are looking relaxed about it: is this the latest fruit of their “reset” in a week that Obama also effected a regime change lite in Saudi Arabia with the removal of Assad’s arch-enemy Prince Bandar Bush.

China starts to make a power move against the U.S. dollar

Posted by seumasach on February 21, 2014

This looks like a good moment to curb CIA activities in Ukraine and Venezuela

Investment Watch

20th February, 2014

In order for our current level of debt-fueled prosperity to continue, the rest of the world must continue to use our dollars to trade with one another and must continue to buy our debt at ridiculously low interest rates.  Of course the number one foreign nation that we depend on to participate in our system is China.  China accounts for more global tradethan anyone else on the planet (including the United States), and most of that trade is conducted in U.S. dollars.  This keeps demand for our dollars very high, and it ensures that we can import massive quantities of goods from overseas at very low cost.  As a major exporting nation, China ends up with gigantic piles of our dollars.  They lend many of those dollars back to us at ridiculously low interest rates.  At this point, China owns more of our national debt than any other country does.  But if China was to decide to quit playing our game and started moving away from U.S. dollars and U.S. debt, our economic prosperity could disappear very rapidly.  Demand for the U.S. dollar would fall and prices would go up.  And interest rates on our debt and everything else in our financial system would go up to crippling levels.  So it is absolutely critical to our financial future that China continues to play our game.

Modern astronomy surely suffers from a kind of blindness. It is either a blindness of mind or one of practice.

The continuing presence of Big Bang cosmology among those who are charged with increasing the store of scientific knowledge proves that there certainly is blindness in some form. Not only astronomers, but science reporters have lost the ability to differentiate fact from theory, thus helping to perpetuate the Big Bang. Media reports constantly assert that new discoveries confirm it when such reports are not based on observational evidence.

Debka

19th February, 2014

The live wire of the Saudi royal house’s drive against President Barack Obama’s détente with Tehran has been dropped. Prince Bandar bin Sultan, Saudi Arabia’s National Security Adviser and Intelligence Director, has not been seen for more than a month. He was reported by DEBKAfile’s US and Saudi sources Wednesday, Feb. 19, to have been removed from the tight policy-making circle in Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia replaces Bandar

Posted by seumasach on February 20, 2014

“Prince Miteb and Mohammed bin Nayef, they are in charge,” the adviser said. The world will see a “new strategy for Syria—quieter, more open, not too extreme. There will be more politics to it, and probably much less military.”

Saudi Arabia Replaces Key Official in Effort to Arm Syria Rebels

Wall Street Journal

19th February, 2014

Saudi Arabia has sidelined its veteran intelligence chief, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, as leader of the kingdom’s efforts to arm and fund Syrian rebels, replacing him with another prince well-regarded by U.S. officials for his successes fighting al-Qaeda, Saudi royal advisers said this week.

European leaders call for Ukraine sanctions

Posted by seumasach on February 19, 2014

For all their talk of an independent Europe, the European leadership still have the look of satraps of empire. If European construction is to succeed these imbeciles are going to have to be called to account. Are they going for another big own goal, to destroy Ukraine and create another poisonous failed state like Kosovo?

Spiegel

119th February, 2014

Violence in Ukraine on Tuesday marked a deadly escalation in tensions between opponents and the government of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. The two sides have been at loggerheads since the end of November, but the eruption on Tuesday night was by far the worst thus far. Weeks of fruitless negotiations over the clearing of occupied buildings and the release of arrested protesters gave way to bloody clashes between demonstrators and Yanukovych’s “Berkut” security forces.

Aleppo, Yabrud, and the end of the war on Syria

War is a Crime

18th February, 2014

The Syrian Arab Army may be on the verge of another set of victories that go far beyond those gained in the summer of 2013 when the Syrian army and Hezbollah took the rebel held city of Qusayr.   The hotly contested battles rage in the major city of Aleppo and the much smaller mountain city of Yabrud. Major gains in either locale would be significant.  Victories in both would raise questions about the various rebel factions and their ability to continue contesting for control of the country.

Ukrainian President: Opposition crossed line with call to arms

Posted by seumasach on February 19, 2014

This kind of mob violence recalls Britain’s own turbulent and violent political past. In 1780 mobs  marched on parliament and rioted for a week leaving massive death and destruction in their wake. Like this violence in Ukraine it was clearly orchestrated from above, in that case with a view to intimidating the Whigs’ great enemy, George 3rd, who they wished to replace with the Prince of Wales who had been groomed to rule on their behalf. Only a fool would see this mob rule as some kind of democratic process. Western support for attempted coup d’etats in other people’s countries makes a complete mockery of the ideas of sovereignty and democracy everywhere and leading mob cheerleaders will be completely discredited.

RIAN

19th February, 2014

KIEV, February 19 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said Wednesday that opposition activists had crossed the line by calling for supporters to take up arms at mass protests intended to oust him from power.
