Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we’re being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I’m liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That’s what’s insane about it.” – John Lennon, before his murder by CIA mind-control subject Mark David Chapman

Iraq:A House of Cards
Posted by smeddum on August 22, 2008
Outside of the blackout accounts of the genocidal destruction, this a more honest account of how things are in Iraq than we usually get from the US mainstream press. There is ultimately a break in logic. ”A full circle” leaves us with the idea that Iraq was a threat to the US; a false premise
This post was written for The New York Times by a Western security
adviser who has worked for journalistic and non-journalistic
organizations in Iraq. His name has been withheld for safety reasons.
I have been involved in looking after commercial clients since early
1997, working across a variety of industries and many countries,
including mining and oil operations in volatile regions throughout
Africa and with journalists and other organizations in Iraq since
2003.
Iraq is far and away the most complex scenario, for sure. Right from
the get-go in 2003, while journalists and other clients were traveling
right across the country, Iraqis were very welcoming. But what was
very obvious to me was that there was very little progress in the
reconstruction of their country. That manifested itself in the lack of
power and water utilities, which affected the general public countrywide. Read the rest of this entry »

French troops ‘killed by Nato jets’
Posted by seumasach on August 21, 2008

Reports that 10 French soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan after being mistakenly attacked by Nato aircraft are to be “looked into,” officials for the military alliance have said.
France’s Le Monde newspaper quoted French soldiers who had survived the ambush near Kabul on Monday saying they were hit in a “friendly fire” incident.

Eric Walberg
20th August, 2008
Russia’s firm response to the Georgian gamble in Ossetia is being interpreted in various ways, but the reality is clear, says Eric Walberg
Analogies of the Ossetia fiasco and its fallout with past events are coming thick and fast. Condoleezza Rice — bless her heart — says, “This is no longer 1968 and the invasion of Czechoslovakia.” James Townsend, a former Pentagon official now with the Atlantic Council, compared the situation to Hungary in 1956.
In both cases, the Russians being, well, the Russians. Neocon Charles Krauthammer says Georgia needs “the equivalent of the Berlin air lift.” The Baltic statelets and Poland go back further yet, arguing it is a replay of Hitler and Stalin’s invasions of their territory, prompting Poland to quickly sign on the dotted line for US missiles (against the Iranians, of course).
But the most telling analogy is with Iraq and its ill-fated invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Kuwait indeed had been a province administered from Baghdad for millennia, so Saddam Hussein understandably coveted it, as Saakashvili does Ossetia. Hussein was convinced that the US had given him the green light after he had spent 10 years fighting the US’s latest bete noire, Iran , just as Saakashvili was given a similar ambivalent go-ahead to invade Ossetia . Even Townsend admits, “I think they misunderstand our eagerness and enthusiasm and think we are going to be behind them for anything.” Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin said it best: “It is hard to imagine that Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili embarked on this risky venture without some sort of approval from the side of the United States.”

Russia-NATO ties sour over Georgia
Posted by seumasach on August 19, 2008
““I fully agree with Mr. Scheffer that ‘business as usual’ between Russia and NATO is no longer possible,” said Mr. Lavrov, adding: “We will draw our conclusions.” Analysts said Russia could stop providing a transport corridor and planes to airlift NATO supplies to Afghanistan. Russian transport aircraft at present ferry about 30 per cent of such shipments. This threat stopped the NATO Foreign Ministers from supporting a U.S. demand for suspending all ties with Russia, including cooperation on counter-terrorism.”

MOSCOW: Russia may complete its withdrawal from Georgia in three to four days if Georgia complies with the terms of the ceasefire agreement, said Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday. He rejected as “biased” a NATO statement on the conflict.

Kaczynski and Sarkozy: war and peace
Posted by seumasach on August 19, 2008
“As Polish prime minister from in 2003-2004, Leszek Miller coordinated Poland’s entry into the EU. The day after Poland was admitted to the European family of nations, he resigned under pressure from his opponents.”
(Leszek Miller for RIA Novosti) – Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili decided to become a hero on the Olympics opening day. To guarantee success, he drafted 100,000 reservists to fight a 70,000-strong republic.
Instead of looking for ways of peaceful settlement with the unruly Abkhazia and South Ossetia, he provoked a bloody conflict which took hundreds of lives. Saakashvili wanted to consolidate his positions in his own country. Having started the war, he did not expect to be its main victim. Meanwhile, he could see it all in advance. A mere 25% of South Ossetia’s population is Georgian and the rest are Ossetians with Russian passports. Moreover, Ossetians remember how Georgians seized their territory by force after the Soviet Union’s disintegration.

McCain’s Georgian Hyperbole
Posted by seumasach on August 18, 2008
“Exaggerating threats is a feature, not a bug, of McCainite neoconservatism, and reveals much about what kind of president he’d make.”
Actually, it reveals a lot more what it takes to become president, and McCain, the master of the external menace, may well be in poll position with his slogan “We’re all Georgians now!” The resemblance of these moves to the film “Wag the dog” has already been noted. Too much can be made of US foreign policy ambition: with disaster all round from Iraq and Afghanistan to Wall Street, US politics now is more about “saving ass” than “kicking ass.”
Matt Welch
18th August
On Thursday of last week, Republican presidential nominee John McCain said that Russia’s invasion of Georgia was “the first probably serious crisis internationally since the end of the Cold War.” This is most certainly not true, at least according to the last two decades’ worth of foreign policy assessments from one John McCain.

False Flag alert: Georgia develops huge provocation against Russia

Georgia develops huge provocation against Russia
18.08.2008 Source: Pravda.Ru URL: http://english.pravda.ru/hotspots/conflicts/106135-provocation-0
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated Sunday that Russia would begin to withdraw its troops from Georgia on August 18. Peacemakers and units of the 58th army, which participated in the peace-enforcement operation after Georgia’s aggression in South Ossetia, will thus leave the territory of Georgia. The decision marked Moscow’s initiative in the implementation of the document originally signed by Dmitry Medvedev and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
It seems that Georgia does not intend to abide by its obligations. Nothing has been reported about Georgia’s plans to pull out its troops from the conflict zone. Moreover, Russian defense officials said that Georgia was conducting subversive military activities in the Caucasus. To crown it all it was said that Georgia was developing a massive provocation against Russia in the town of Gori. Read the rest of this entry »

Georgia War a Neocon Election Ploy?
Posted by seumasach on August 18, 2008
This explanation does make sense of otherwise incomprehensible events. The author, however, fails to point out the relationship of Obama to the anti-Russian agenda of Brzezinski and Soros. The fact that McCain has stolen the Democrats clothes on this issue also then explains another peculiarity of this affair: the fact that the various left networks have, for the most part, suddenly stopped banging the anti-Russian drum.

Is it possible that this time the October surprise was tried in August, and that the garbage issue of brave little Georgia struggling for its survival from the grasp of the Russian bear was stoked to influence the U.S. presidential election?

Iran says launches first home-built satellite
Posted by smeddum on August 17, 2008
TEHRAN (AFP) — Iran said it successfully launched its first domestically produced satellite into orbit on Sunday, a move that could further exacerbate tensions with the West over its nuclear drive.
“President (Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad was at the lanch of the communications satellite Omid (Hope) from Iran’s space station,” government spokesman Gholamhossein Elham said, according to the Fars news agency.
“It was launched into space on his order,” it added.
A statement from the Iranian armed forces said it was the first launch of the domestically-built satellite, the official news agency IRNA reported. Read the rest of this entry »

Iraq reserves right to hold Blackwater trial
BAGHDAD (AFP) — Iraq on Sunday said it reserves the right to put on trial six guards working for private security firm Blackwater USA for their alleged role in the killing of 17 Iraqi civilians in Baghdad last year.
“There is information that half a dozen Blackwater guards who have been accused of shooting and killing 17 Iraqis are to be tried in Washington,” government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh told reporters. Read the rest of this entry »
