China may be Trump’s best hope to ‘make America great again’

Posted by seumasach on October 13, 2017

This is the key issue of the Trump presidency behind all the rhetoric, the posturing and the threats. If Trump can consolidate a partnership with China we will know that there is method in his madness. Otherwise it is simply madness with Trump breaking America’s old partnerships whilst failing to create new ones.

China is not America’s enemy or competitor or whatever name the US anti-China crowd labels it with. It is not challenging US global supremacy or stealing its jobs, as many in America claim. On the contrary, the Chinese and US economies are increasingly intertwined, becoming each other’s largest trade partners and major investors.

Indian Punchline

4th May, 2017

The US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy team bears an appearance of being dominated by the military brass. This in turn engendered the perception that Trump’s ‘America First’ foreign policy is not going to happen. But in reality Trump has been biding his time. One sign of it has been the slow, unobtrusive emergence of state secretary Rex Tillerson at the centre stage of policy-making in the recent weeks. (I subscribe to the opinion that Tillerson was an inspired choice President-elect Trump had made in his cabinet appointments.)

Trump’s NSA bluffed. No sunlight between China and Russia

Posted by seumasach on April 19, 2017

“No matter Trump’s game plan to drive a wedge between China and Russia by exploiting Xi’s interest in a ‘new type of major country relations’ with US, it is preposterous that Beijing will allow any erosion to the Sino-Russian entente. The point is, for both China and Russia, their number one priority in world politics will be to push back at US hegemony and there is no daylight possible here between them for a foreseeable future.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced earlier today that the Director of the General Office of the Communist Party of China Li Zhanshu will visit Russia on April 25-27 at the invitation of his counterpart, head of the Presidential Administration in the Kremlin Anton Vaino. The Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said in Beijing that the two officials will discuss China-Russia relations “as previously agreed on by the countries’ leaders” and that the Chinese side is confident that the visit will further galvanize Sino-Russian ties. For all his tough talk in Tokyo and Seoul, Rex Tillerson adopted a remarkably soft tone when he met China’s president and officials in Beijing during the last stop of his first Asian tour as US secretary of state last week.

President Xi meets U.S. Secretary of State

Posted by seumasach on March 19, 2017

“The U.S. side is ready to develop relations with China based on the principle of no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, said Tillerson.”

As Trump seeks to actively undermine the Atlantic Alliance with both the UK and the EU, he appears set for a closer engagement with China. This approach closely corresponds to US national interests since only through partnership with China can the US rebuild it’s infrastructure and industrial base.

BEIJING, March 19 (Xinhua) — President Xi Jinping met here Sunday with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, saying that cooperation is the only correct choice for both countries.
