Ashton seems to realize that Russian support will be crucial in getting the EU out of this mess. Cosying up to Russia won’t endear her to the Maidan men however! Of course, she has committed the EU to nothing by way of financial support- Ukraine to be left to tender mercies of IMF. This is the mother of all messes.

WASHINGTON, Feb 20 (KUNA) — President Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan discussed a range of bilateral and regional issues, including the growing terrorism in Syria.
The two leaders discussed “the importance of close cooperation between our the two countries to address the growing terrorist presence in Syria and on the shared interest in continuing efforts to advance a political solution to the Syria conflict,” said the White House in a statement late on Wednesday.

The Maidan gunmen will be watering at the mouth at the prospect of $35 billion dollars but of course nothing will be forthcoming. For once the ratings agencies have got it right:
On Friday, ratings agency Standard & Poor downgraded Ukraine’s credit status to two levels above default. “We now believe it is likely Ukraine will default in the absence of significantly favorable changes in circumstances, which we do not anticipate,” said the agency.
