Pilger’s claim that Megrahi was framed seems well-based, What is surprising is the credence he gives to claims allegedly made by the intelligence services that the attack was carried out on the orders of Iran. This is an awful lot of trouble for the British authorities to go too to avoid revealing evidence of Iran’s involvement: you’d think rather that they would leap at the opportunity!
The fact that the Anglo-Americans originally wished to implicate Iran is hardly a reason to assume their guilt. One usual suspect can be as good as another, depending on the circumstances. The defence at the Lockerbie trial made a lot of the fact that the bomb was most likely planted at Heathrow and a break-in was reported there shortly before the flight departure. The Iranian connection, however, seems to depend on the bomb having been placed at Frankfurt airport.
Pilger is kicking through an open door in claiming Megrahi’s innocence but disappoints in implying that the evidence being concealed from us would lead us to another conventional villain, namely, Iran.

The hysteria over the release of the so-called Lockerbie bomber reveals much about the political and media class on both sides of the Atlantic, especially Britain. From Gordon Brown’s “repulsion” to Barack Obama’s “outrage,” the theater of lies and hypocrisy is dutifully attended by those who call themselves journalists. “But what if Megrahi lives longer than three months?” whined a BBC reporter to the Scottish First Minister, Alex Salmond. “What will you say to your constituents, then?”

Gordon Brown yesterday issued his strongest hint that British troops will start to quit Afghanistan by the end of next year.
In a major shift of strategy, the Prime Minister said a target to train up 134,000 Afghan soldiers will be brought forward by a year to December 2010.
He announced that cutting troop numbers was now ‘the basis of our strategy’.
Mr Brown spoke as two more soldiers’ bodies were flown home for burial. So far 212 soldiers have died in the conflict.

A presidential candidate opposed to the Iraq War is elected and enters the Oval Office. Yet six months later, there are still essentially the same number of troops in Iraq as were there when his predecessor left, the same number, in fact, used in the original invasion of Iraq in March 2003. Moreover, the new president remains on the “withdrawal” schedule the previous administration laid out for him with the same caveats being issued about whether it can even be met. “With the motto of yuai, Hatoyama says he hopes to leave behind parochial nationalism and jingoism and instead further develop the East Asian Community to the extent that it resembles an Asian version of the European Union. He also advocates a common Asian currency as a natural extension of the rapid economic growth in the region.”

TOKYO – History sometimes throws up wonderful ironies: in Japan, a rising grandson is about to destroy his grandfather’s legacy.
With opinion polls suggesting a massive victory for his opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) in Sunday’s general election, Yukio Hatoyama is poised to become the next prime minister, replacing Taro Aso. This would mark a fundamental change of power in the country, ending the Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP’s) near-perpetual one-party dominance since Hatoyama’s grandfather Ichiro created the LDP in 1955.

Counterpunch
By MARSHALL AUERBACK
No more free passes. A number of the President’s supporters who expressed concerns about the pro-Wall Street tilt of his early administration decisions were prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt so long as he came through on health care. President Barack Obama’s statement over the weekend that the public option for insurance coverage was “just a sliver” of the overall proposal, and the suggestion by Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, that a direct government role in a system intended to provide virtually universal coverage was “not the essential element”, appear to provide conclusive evidence of this administration’s capitulation to corporate interests. The “change you can believe in” President increasingly looks more like a Manchurian candidate of the right. Read the rest of this entry »
