This how the Guardian newspaper is trying to spin yesterday’s White House statement which pointedly failed to recognise Ukraine’s “interim president”. Carney precise words were as follows:
So does the U.S. consider Yanukovych deposed and recognize chairman of the Ukrainian parliament Oleksandr Turchynov as the interim president?
“Well, we believe he is the lawfully elected speaker of parliament. The — Mr. Yanukovych had left Kiev and packed up his belongings and left, and his whereabouts are not known. So, he’s certainly not actively leading the country at present.

Threatened with death, Ukrainian Rada Chairman Volodymyr Rybak tendered his resignation on 22 February 2014, and left the parliament.
Without further delay, the remaining members of the Rada adopted several motions, including the release of Yulia Tymoshenko, former Prime Minister and the richest person in the country, sentenced to seven years in prison for abuse of power in a gas contract negotiation with Russia.
Simultaneously, Nazi groups invaded the main government buildings after having seized in a military armory.

“If you consider Kalashnikov-toting people in black masks who are roaming Kiev to be the government, then it will be hard for us to work with that government,” Mr Medvedev told the state-run RIA news agency. “Some of our foreign partners think differently.”

The Maidan gunmen will be watering at the mouth at the prospect of $35 billion dollars but of course nothing will be forthcoming. For once the ratings agencies have got it right:
On Friday, ratings agency Standard & Poor downgraded Ukraine’s credit status to two levels above default. “We now believe it is likely Ukraine will default in the absence of significantly favorable changes in circumstances, which we do not anticipate,” said the agency.

This Spanish report will dismay the forces behind the coup in Ukraine. The worst thing that can happen to “opposition” of this type is taking power. especially on the back of armed insurrection. Here we learn that the Maidan gunmen want “new faces” who won’t as they see it betray Ukraine. They are not happy with the appointment of Turchinov and don’t want Tymoshenko. Turchinov himself is delirious calling on Ukraine to “renew the path of European integration”. This is a non-starter: can you imagine the EU taking in one of the world’s most backward economies of 45 million people. All the Europeans ever offered and ever will offer is a free trade deal backed by IMF loans whose conditions will destroy any government that accepts them. We are seeing an illegal government, brought to power through foreign intervention, held hostages to armed madmen following a purely imaginary political agenda. And all this in Europe with the approval of the EU. Surreal, astonishing!

“Russia most likely will adopt the same stance towards pro-European Union politicians that the Egyptian military and its Saudi backers took toward Egypt’s the Muslim Brotherhood: let the opposition take the blame for economic and social chaos, and then move in when the country is on its knees.”
It will now become obvious that all the stuff about Ukraine joining EU was nothing but a rouse. It succeeded in drawing protesters onto streets with EU flags but even if they can sideline the militants and restore some kind of order they will not be able to bail out Ukraine given they can barely bailout Greece, Spain etc. Any stable government in Ukraine will turn to Russia for aid by default. I believe this intervention aimed at a civil war as the Western media never ceased to suggest. Yanukovitch’s ceding of power could then have been the masterstroke. The hapless Ashton now heads to Ukraine in a state of blind panic.

Asia Times

Western governments are jubilant over the fall of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich, a Russian ally. They may be underestimating Vladimir Putin: Russia has the option to hasten Ukraine’s slide into chaos and wait until the hapless European Union acquiesces to – if not begs for – Russian intervention.
