[Although widely unnoticed the shift in US policy in the region is deep and far-reaching. This back down by Turkey is one result of it, the marginalisation of Qatar, Hamas and the the Muslim Brotherhood is another. The stage is being set for the Geneva 2 conference.]

ISTANBUL — Earlier this month, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan openly criticized al-Qaida-linked terrorist groups operating in Syria. Previously, Turkey’s government had been reluctant to criticize such groups, and has been frequently accused of supporting them tacitly, if not openly. But Ankara now appears to be distancing itself from them.

The best outcome of the ‘2 plus 2′ — foreign ministers plus defence ministers — Russian-American meeting in Washington on Friday could be, arguably, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s disclosure that the US side “confirmed” at the meeting that President Barack Obama did not cancel but merely postponed his ‘bilateral’ with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, which was expected to take place in Moscow early September during his Russia visit in connection with the G20 at St.Petersburg.

After the removal of the Emir of Qatar by the United States and his abdication in favor of his son Tamim, the situation in North Africa and the Middle East has evolved rapidly. To Washington’s surprise, the Egyptian military has chosen this moment to overthrow President Mohamed Morsi, a Muslim Brother sponsored by Doha. As a result, the loss of Qatari support turned into a rout of the Brothers who also feel threatened in Tunisia, Libya and Gaza.

[I disagree with Thierry Meyssan only in his characterisation of this process as “a new Sykes-Picot agreement”. As Meyssan himself says Anglo-American imperialism is finished. Consequently, multipolarity triumphs and in particular Russian diplomacy. The US has entered into a de facto strategic partnership with Russia but this is a benign end of empire scenario rather than a new imperialist division of the world. We should not underestimate the potential within this process; the inauguration of a new post-imperial epoque of global peace.]

You’ve probably noticed the change in tone of the atlanticist press on the Syrian issue. The “rebels”, these “champions of Freedom”, have suddenly turned into fanatical terrorists who tear each other apart. For Thierry Meyssan, there is nothing new under the sun: Washington has simply abandoned the idea of overthrowing Assad and is heading to the Geneva II conference. Next step: the loss of French influence in the region.

Intervention in Syria would implicate US in war crimes, warns top military officer
24th July, 2013
Martin Dempsey, the US’s highest-ranking military officer, has warned against intervention in the Syrian conflict. In a letter to the chairman of the senate armed services committee laying out military options, Gen Dempsey said arming and training rebels could lead to a deepening of US involvement; would cost $500 million a year initially; would risk arming al-Qaeda forces; and would implicate the US in war crimes

It looks increasingly that solving the Egyptian puzzle is going to take us all to Syria. How far the army’s coup in Egypt resets the geopolitics of the Middle East, or, conversely, whether the coup itself forms the commencement of a region-wide tectonic shift that is going to play out over time – this is the big question.

Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Yasser Abd Rabboh called on Hamas to reevaluate its regional position Sunday, now that Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy, its main Islamic ally, has been toppled. “The victory of the revolution in Egypt and the fall of the Muslim Brotherhood warrants [such] reflection,” he told Palestinian state radio.

For all the huff and puff the Americans understand that the options they face are regional, possibly global war or the Geneva II peace conference. Uncharacteristically all options are not on the table.

More than 100,000 people have been killed in Syria’s uprising, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The death toll from the civil war is now 100,191 people, it said.
Violence raged as US Secretary of State John Kerry ruled out a military solution for Syria and called for a settlement based on last year’s Geneva peace plan.
