Biden moves to restore trust with NATO allies

Posted by seumasach on February 18, 2021

“The Pentagon views the meetings as a way to reset the alliance after years of disruption, and a chance to set new goals on confronting China, combating climate change, and bringing NATO-aligned countries like Finland and Sweden closer to the alliance, Breaking Defense reported.”

Where the Pentagon and NATO lead Biden and the Europeans will follow? That is the question. Notably, no mention of Ukraine membership or Johnson’s Asia NATO

7 Things to Know About the Pentagon’s New Plan for a 500-Ship Navy Fleet

From the Defender 2020 NATO military exercises back in March, the biggest since the 90s- carried out incidentally in the midst of a supposedly deadly epidemic, to this grandiose scheme to maintain US naval superiority in the China Seas the contours of war are clearly delineated under the shadow of covid panic. Whilst the people’s fear remains focused on covid, this is the truly frightening bit. Trump has fired Esper but will Trump survive: the anti-Trump coup means the military/industrial complex moves to centre stage, the deep state becomes the state and, in Europe, the EU rather than just living under the shadow of NATO becomes NATO.”If we can assemble the collective will and determination to see it through, I’m confident Battle Force 2045 will maintain our maritime superiority far into the future and ensure the United States Navy remains the greatest in the world for generations to come,” he said. The new plan, which matched a document Defense News first obtained and reported on last month, marks a significant increase in the 355-ship fleet the Navy has been working toward. Esper acknowledged the U.S. will face challenges in building a 500-plus ship fleet under tightening budgets. But he stressed the buildup is necessary, citing China’s troubling and “brazen destabilizing” actions in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as Beijing’s plans to modernize its force in the next 15 years and field “a world-class military by 2049.”

Gridlock – Biden may or may not win, but Trump remains ‘President’ of Red America

“The fracturing of the ‘One Normal’, by contrast, provides some kind of respite to much of the globe.”

A crucial element of the reset, rarely mentioned, is the formation of a global alliance against Russia and China. In the absence of a clear cut Democratic victory that has suddenly become a lot less doable. In particular, reducing Europe to a NATO outpost against Russia is inconceivable;e with America wobbling at the helm.

The December 3-4 summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in London resembles a family reunion after the acrimony over the issue of military spending by America’s European allies.

Russia, Turkey, Iran: Adversaries of the West’s NATO alliance

Posted by seumasach on August 7, 2019

Telegraph hawk Con Coughlin laments the demise of the Western Alliance. But don’t they still have Oceania- as in Orwell’s 1984? If so, it’s a motley crew under the erratic leadership of Trump with Dad’s Army bringing up the rear under Captain Johnson, Brazil’s thirty families representative Bolsonaro hoping for some rich pickings and an increasingly sceptical ANZAC division hoping they don’t completely destroy good business with China.

Germany’s outright rejection of Washington’s request [to support Washington’s proposal for a maritime protection force in the Arabian Gulf to protect shipping from attacks by Iran] is likely to inflame tensions further between Washington and Berlin. U.S. President Donald J. Trump is already at odds with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on a range of issues, from Germany’s obstinate refusal to meet its Nato funding commitments to its pursuit of closer energy ties with Russia through the construction of the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

Turkey faces threats for inking landmark arms deal with Russia

Posted by seumasach on September 19, 2017

“Obviously, there is one result the Western sanctions produce – the targeted countries come together to create alternative poles of power. Threats and restrictive measures spur the process. This policy has failed to keep Turkey away from military cooperation with Russia. In the multipolar world there is always an alternative to turn to.”

The long awaited deal has taken place. A deposit has already been paid. Turkey has finally signed the $2.5bn (£1.9bn) contract with Russia to buy S-400 advanced missile defense system. With a range of 400 kilometers (248 miles), the system can shoot down up to 80 targets simultaneously, aiming two missiles at each one, at an altitude of up to 30 km.

Turkey pivots from NATO

Posted by seumasach on September 14, 2017

Zero Hedge

13th September, 2017

Turkey pivots from NATO and signs Russia missile deal confirming, and sending the clearest sign of his previously discussed pivot toward Russia and away from NATO and the West, on Tuesday President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Turkey had signed a deal to purchase a Russian surface-to-air missile system, and paid the first installment. The deal cements Turkey’s recent rapprochement with Russia, despite differences over the war in Syria, the downing of a Russian fighter jet over Turkey in late 2015 and the assassination of a Russian ambassador earlier this year, and comes as Turkey’s ties with the United States and European Union have become strained to the point of breaking.

President Xi meets U.S. Secretary of State

Posted by seumasach on March 19, 2017

“The U.S. side is ready to develop relations with China based on the principle of no conflict, no confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, said Tillerson.”

As Trump seeks to actively undermine the Atlantic Alliance with both the UK and the EU, he appears set for a closer engagement with China. This approach closely corresponds to US national interests since only through partnership with China can the US rebuild it’s infrastructure and industrial base.

BEIJING, March 19 (Xinhua) — President Xi Jinping met here Sunday with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, saying that cooperation is the only correct choice for both countries.

As Donald Trump takes the reins and we all prepare for the next four years, the need to translate rhetoric into reality comes to the fore. Trump spent the campaign repeating a phrase that horrified the elites – especially the foreign policy Establishment – even adopting it as his official campaign theme: “America first.”

Major foreign policy shift: Turkey abandoning EU for SCO

Posted by seumasach on November 23, 2016

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on November 20 that Turkey did not need to join the European Union «at all costs». Instead, it could become part of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), or Shanghai Pact. The Turkish leader said he had already discussed the idea with Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev.
