George Soros’ think tank INET apparently sponsored Alexis Tsipras’ trip to the US. According to an articlein the German Wirtschaftswoche magazine. The article, basically wanted to analyze Soros’ frenzy to bring down the Euro, and while doing so, it revealed how this multi-billionaire is connected with the SYRIZA party. The article, which is signed by Florian Zerfamp, Angela Chenersntorf and Dieter Snaas, (phonetic spelling) was actually published on Valentine’s Day in Germany, but was only re-published in Greek in the “Ta Nea” newspaper on Saturday. It speaks openly about a very prominent US investor and his relationship with SYRIZA, while there is also mention of Tsipras’ trip to the United States. The icing on the cake, however, is near the end, since the article leaves it to be understood that Soros is using SYRIZA to get to Germany!

Coming at the end of a week in which the Greek people overwhelmingly reasserted their desire to remain in the Eurozone, the “No” vote can only be a result of Tsipras’ ability to convince them that their position in the Eurozone is safe, whatever happens. That now looks like a very shaky assumption and, I expect, a brazen deception on Tspras’ part. It is particularly pertinent to recall, at this point, that it was German Finance Minister, Schauble himself, who first proposed a referendum on proposals for Greece back in May and that this same Schauble had been arguing for Greek withdrawal from the euro in the face of the position of Angela Merkel. Merkel now looks on the way out if the latest take down on her by Spiegel is anything to go by. Could it be that, after a murky and convoluted process that has left everyone perplexed, Schauble has won?

Now is the moment when the failure of the left to develop clear objectives makes them part of the problem rather than part of the solution. The alternatives are either austerity without end to bail out the banks or temporary austerity, with guarantees to protect the weakest, as the banks are put through bankruptcy and the system converts from a parasitic financier, consumer system to a productive system with a reconstructed real economy. Their “anti-imperialism” is merely a pose which ignores the simple reality that the entire West has enjoyed a good standard of living for decades based on the collective exploitation of the rest of the world. The conversion from living off the rest to relying on the fruits of our own labour is bound to be painful but is inevitable given that that Global South is no longer obliged to continue that game. The “anti-austerity” mantra is based on the false notion that there is no crisis of imperialism and their purely emotive knee-jerk reaction could disrupt Tsipras’ intelligent war of position which is helping to lay the foundations for a pan-European transformative programme.
