Sunday saw the start of the first-ever Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. Washington sent a delegation led by White House adviser Matthew Pottinger to the summit, a sharp contrast from its previous attitude to Beijing’s infrastructure-building proposals. Washington “recognizes the importance” of the Belt and Road initiative, according to the US Commerce Department.

The US President Donald Trump’s foreign policy team bears an appearance of being dominated by the military brass. This in turn engendered the perception that Trump’s ‘America First’ foreign policy is not going to happen. But in reality Trump has been biding his time. One sign of it has been the slow, unobtrusive emergence of state secretary Rex Tillerson at the centre stage of policy-making in the recent weeks. (I subscribe to the opinion that Tillerson was an inspired choice President-elect Trump had made in his cabinet appointments.)

China should be quite willing to do so as it has been actively financing various projects along the Silk Road.”

Later this week, China’s President Xi Jinping will meet US President Donald Trump in Florida at the unofficial White House. In view of Trump’s predilection for unpredictability and brash outbursts, some pundits thought Xi might be taking a risk if the impromptu summit does not turn out well.

As Trump seeks to actively undermine the Atlantic Alliance with both the UK and the EU, he appears set for a closer engagement with China. This approach closely corresponds to US national interests since only through partnership with China can the US rebuild it’s infrastructure and industrial base.

China recently confirmed it was participating in “joint counterterrorism operations” inside Afghanistan. The size of Beijing’s force is still unclear but reports began surfacing last November that it was patrolling in northeastern Afghanistan’s Little Pamir region.

The Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi is in Washington at the invitation of the US administration. He is the first senior Chinese official to visit the US after President Donald Trump took office. Yang had visited New York in December to meet with Trump’s transition team.

Rex Tillerson, US President Donald Trump’s nominee as state secretary, has narrowly won confirmation from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee – 11 senators in favor and 10 against. The split is on party lines and the clincher came on Monday when Republican senator Marco Polo (who regarded Russian President Vladimir Putin to be a ‘war criminal’ and vainly insisted that Tillerson agreed with him) fell in line at the eleventh hour.
