In a stunning vote of “no confidence” in the US monopoly over global payment infrastructure, Germany’s foreign minister Heiko Maas called for the creation of a new payments system independent of the US that would allow Brussels to be independent in its financial operations from Washington and as a means of rescuing the nuclear deal between Iran and the west.

“Similar efforts to build up military links have been unsuccessful in the past. Britain, the bloc’s biggest military power, has long sought to thwart EU defence cooperation, opposing anything that might lead to a European army.”
British and American self-marginalization have finally allowed Europe to begin to caste of it’s vassalage to the Anglo-Americans and a key piece in the multipolar jigsaw falls into place. Of course, an “enemy” is required to serve as a justification for any military project and this role, of course, falls to the usual suspect: Russia.

The EU took a major step towards building closer defence ties on Monday (13 November), with 23 member states signing a landmark agreement, promoted by France and Germany, to fund and boost cooperation following Britain’s decision to leave the bloc.

This report contains the highly significant conclusion that the USA is not adopting “leur rôle traditionnel en tant que leader dans l’Alliance ou tout au moins pas de manière fiable” [it’s traditional role as leader of the NATO Alliance, or. at least, not in a reliable manner]. As a consequence of this conclusion Germany seeks to take on the leadership role. Of course, a NATO not led by the USA is no longer NATO but something else: it appears it may become the foundation of an independent European defense capability.

Alors que la chancelière Merkel et le président Macron sont déjà convenus de gouverner ensemble l’Union européenne, le think tank officiel de l’Allemagne fédérale, la SWP, préconise que Berlin prenne le leadership militaire de l’Union et de l’Otan. Prenant acte de la position du président Trump qui limite l’influence états-unienne au sein de l’Alliance transatlantique, les experts gouvernementaux considèrent comme possible pour Berlin de prendre la tête de l’Otan face à la Russie en investissant massivement dans le développement de son armée et la création de forces multinationales.

A stable European security architecture only can be built by involving Russia in the process, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said. She also called on the West to honor its obligations under treaties signed with Moscow. Despite current tensions between the West and Moscow, “we can establish a European peace order only with Russia,” the chancellor said in her Saturday video podcast published on the German government’s website. She went on to say that, “in the field of the European defense and security policy, we should do our best to improve our contact with Russia.”

Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany has warned the United States that Berlin would not necessarily take the side of Washington in a potential war against North Korea, saying the two sides of the conflict on the Korean Peninsula had better seek a diplomatic solution and avoid direct military confrontation.

Coming from Paul Craig Roberts, who routinely dismisses Europe as a US surrogate, this is strong confirmation that the potentiality of an independent Europe may be becoming an actuality. This prospect is greatly strengthened by British withdrawal from the EU. As the UK descends into political and economic chaos the benefits of Brexit are to be found entirely on the other side of the English channel.
