FRESH concern is being raised about the potential dangers of cellphone usage – especially as SA begins to roll out higher-power broadband technologies.
The radiation generated by cellphones and base stations has been under scrutiny for years. But for every report proclaiming a health risk, another proves inconclusive or dismisses previous research as scare-mongering.
Now the local branch of the Electromagnetic Action Group (Emag SA) has collated studies from around the world and is calling on network operators and Icasa, the industry regulator, to recognise and minimise the risks. Read the rest of this entry »

Roberts is mistaken in attributing the anti-Russian agenda to the Republicans: some neo-cons even stood out against the independence of Kosovo whereas Obama’s link to the russophobe Brzezinski is now well known. It appears, rather, that they have stolen the Democrats’ clothes on this issue. They may, of course, be more capable of carrying through on their threats, but the main concern of the Republicans is to hold power in order to stop any repercussions of their crimes of the last eight years. The bizarre and brutal attack on South Ossetia may just have done the trick.

The USA acknowledged that Russia had virtually defeated the US, but not the Georgian army in South Ossetia. US instructors have spent four years training the Georgian army for an attack against Russian citizens. The outcome of six grim days of bloodshed in the Caucasus has triggered an outpouring of the most nauseating hypocrisy from western politicians and their captive media. As talking heads thundered against Russian imperialism and brutal disproportionality, US vice-president Dick Cheney, faithfully echoed by Gordon Brown and David Miliband, declared that “Russian aggression must not go unanswered”. George Bush denounced Russia for having “invaded a sovereign neighbouring state” and threatening “a democratic government”. Such an action, he insisted, “is unacceptable in the 21st century”.
Could these by any chance be the leaders of the same governments that in 2003 invaded and occupied – along with Georgia, as luck would have it – the sovereign state of Iraq on a false pretext at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives? Or even the two governments that blocked a ceasefire in the summer of 2006 as Israel pulverised Lebanon’s infrastructure and killed more than a thousand civilians in retaliation for the capture or killing of five soldiers?
