On August 19, NATO foreign ministers convened in Brussels to discuss the Georgia crisis, following intense pressure from the US. The final declaration accused Russia of using “disproportionate” military force and “deliberately destructing civilian infrastructure”, but said nothing about the Georgian aggression against South Ossetia that began on August 8 and initiated the conflict.

Insurance is one of those things that’s supposed to help you sleep at night. It’s right up there with putting locks on your doors and installing airbags in your teenager’s new car. It should mean that you’ve got one less thing to worry about.
So when you find out that the insurance policy itself may be at risk, it’s basically like hearing all those precautions were just a huge waste of time.

SUKHUMI, August 27 (RIA Novosti) – A Russian naval official reported an increase in NATO warships near the Georgian coast on Wednesday.
“According to our information, NATO ships are in the Black Sea and their numbers are increasing,” said Vice Adm. Sergei Menyailo, commander of the Novorossiisk naval base.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, there is a valid assumption that the bees are on their way out, but can they really be replaced by fruit bats? Bats themselves are under threat of extinction and do pollinate but they are several million short when it comes to the massive pollination tasks of bees. Including bumblebees ( BBC 2001) and here MSNBC(2007). Yet again there is an eerie ignorance in both articles of the role played by magnetite in bees navigation.

Sacramento, California – With the widespread issue of hive collapse affecting agriculture around the world, CDFA Secretary A.G. Kawamura is promoting and supporting the Native Pollinators In Agriculture Work Group, which is conducting a field tour of working farms in Yolo County on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.
Secretary Kawamura is working with the project’s steering committee as it examines real world opportunities to enhance pollination services and profitability with native pollinators, such as native bumblebees and other bees native to California; some moths; and even fruit bats.
