Things have moved on apace since Gates visit. The message is clear: no democracy in the Arab Peninsula. The Saudi invasion was cheerily reported by the BBC on Monday, then we had the shootings and now the opposition is being rounded up. It’s OK though: they’re hardliners.

Libya: Rebel forces ‘repel Ajdabiya attack’

They’ve been waiting to see which way the wind is blowing. Now we have reached what looks like a turning point: opposition are using helicopters, tanks and planes from forces which have defected. Aljazeera reports:
Medical sources in Misurata said that at least 80 members of Gaddafi’s forces were killed during yesterday’s fighting.
and that
in Benghazi, opposition protesters are buoyed by news that fighters in a nearby town have beaten back an offensive by Gaddafi’s forces. While some in the city are apprehensive that the war may still come to their door step, they remain defiant, vowing to fight on to defeat Gaddafi’s troops.
Major General Abdul-Fattah Younis has given an optimistic assessment of the revolution’s military position.
It doesn’t look at all certain, as most media have reported, that Gaddafi’s forces are winning.
Time then for the B plan,US/NATO intervention. Unfortunately, the revolutionary leadership. or part of it, has been calling for this move which will steal the thunder of the revolution’s triumph.

Chernobyl: the true scale of the accident?

We have been assured that the Japanese nuclear disaster is not as serious as that at Chernobyl. But according to the WHO/IAEA the Chernobyl disaster wasn’t that serious anyway. “Good science” exponent and former head of WHO bodies ICRP and ICNIRP, Dr Michael Repacholi was, of course, in there as always with words of reassurance:
“the health effects of the accident were potentially horrific, but when you add them up using validated conclusions from good science, the public health effects were not nearly as substantial as had at first been feared.”
Repacholi has also been to the fore in reassuring us about EM radiation from the mobile phone network. In fact, Repacholi’s powers of reassurance are quite exceptional: even deadly depleted uranium is in his view “basically safe”:
“Depleted uranium is basically safe – you can touch depleted uranium for hours and not cause and radiation damage you can ingest it and it’s excreted through the body – 99 per cent of it goes within about a day – you would have to ingest a huge amount of depleted uranium dust to cause any adverse health effect.”
Still just in case you want even more reassurance here’s the WHO’s 2005 press release on Chernobyl twenty years on. There you will learn that:
“This was a very serious accident with major health consequences, especially for thousands of workers exposed in the early days who received very high radiation doses, and for the thousands more stricken with thyroid cancer. By and large, however, we have not found profound negative health impacts to the rest of the population in surrounding areas, nor have we found widespread contamination that would continue to pose a substantial threat to human health, within a few exceptional, restricted areas.”

5 SEPTEMBER 2005 | GENEVA – A total of up to 4000 people could eventually die of radiation exposure from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) accident nearly 20 years ago, an international team of more than 100 scientists has concluded.
As of mid-2005, however, fewer than 50 deaths had been directly attributed to radiation from the disaster, almost all being highly exposed rescue workers, many who died within months of the accident but others who died as late as 2004.

Gaddafi’s forces bogged down in clashes in Libya

So, which is it? Are Gaddafi’s forces bogged down or our they on an unstoppable course to retake Benghazi? My take is that they are bogged down and that time is not on their side. If this is true London and Washington will be worried- they want the Arab revolution crushed here and now right across the Arab world. On the other hand they want to prepare intervention if his demise is seen as inevitable in order to have some influence on the post-Gaddafi set up. The pretext for that would be an imminent Gaddafi victory. The media chorus announcing the collapse of the revolution could therefore mean the exact opposite.

Egyptian minister dismantles state security service

CAIRO, 16 MARCH: Egypt today disbanded its much-feared and hated state security service, shutting down its headquarters and offices throughout the country, conceding one of the main demands of the protesters, who led the recent uprising.

Hillary Clinton snubbed by young leaders of Egypt’s revolt

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Cairo this morning, but she won’t be meeting with a coalition of six youth groups that emerged from Egypt’s revolution last month. In a blunt snub, members of the January 25 Revolution Youth Coalition said “based on (Clinton’s) negative position from the beginning of the revolution and the position of the US administration in the Middle East, we reject this invitation.”
