Having marginalised ourselves in Europe we are now in a difficult position as the USA engages with China. Britain’s only realistic course is a constructive engagement with Europe but we prefer to dream the Atlanticist dream to the last.

British Armed Forces Minister Nick Harvey has launched a veiled criticism of the US for shifting naval capacity to Asia saying the move undermines the Atlantic security.

Russia is not in negotiation with the US on the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Tuesday. “No, we are not conducting such negotiations,” he said, as cited by RIA Novosti. A delegation of the US State Department will arrive in Moscow this week to discuss the Syrian conflict. Bogdanov also said that the issue of turning the UN observer mission in Syria into a peacekeeping mission is not on the agenda at present.

According to the Vatican, the Syrian government is not responsible for the atrocities committed against civilians. Quite the opposite. Vatican sources point to existence of armed gangs and terrorists.

In the days when Britannia ruled the waves, the British political tradition was to keep Europe down by keeping it disunited. Enthralling notions can linger long past their usefulness. Just as former British naval supremacy is being unconsciously parodied on the Thames, so a growing array of political forces in Britain are clamouring for a break-up of the euro and even of the European Union.

J’ai regardé tout à l’heure, sur BFMTV, la conférence de presse entre François Hollande et Vladimir Poutine à l’Élysée. Nous avons vu deux styles, l’un direct et pas du tout diplomatique, celui de François Hollande, et l’autre, fin, diplomatique et surtout politique, celui du président russe Vladimir Poutine.

Much can be said about Wednesday’s, May 23, EU summit. Reporters will be busy in analyzing the diverging views between the French President Mr Hollande and the German Chancellor Mrs Merkel over the issue of eurobonds. Economists will be divided over the additional capital that needs to be given to the European Investment Bank and the actual leverage it can afford, to carry out massive investment projects across the area’s most hardly-hit regions.

The left in US/UK think these are basically rich societies and that therefore everything can be resolved by redistribution. But our wealth is paper wealth alone and is dissolving with alarming speed. Redistribution is fine but the crux of the matter is reconstruction of the real economy.
