Iran’s Rouhani hogs Davos show

No one can be at two places at the same time — not even Iranians. In retrospect, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon might have done Tehran a favor by inviting it to the Geneva II conference (January 22) on Syria and then retracting. That left Tehran to take to the Davos meet (January 22) with gusto and undivided attention.

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) launched his “diplomatic intifada” against Israel and exit from the Kerry peace initiative Thursday, Jan. 23, from Moscow. His meetings with President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev marked his breakaway from the US-led peace process with Israel, four months before it was due to expire, and signaled his bid for Russian backing for a Palestinian state.

Around 100 people protested earlier today outside the British Prime Minister’s office outside Downing Street in the government area of Whitehall in central London.
The protesters are opposing the pro-Nato Libyan junta’s air strikes against the southern Libyan town of Sabha yesterday and the day before, strikes targeting armed fighters, many of whom are supporters of the previous government of the Jamahirya or the ‘State of the Masses’ under the leadership of Muammar Gaddafi since September 1969. The pro-Nato Libyan junta has made clear itself that it has lost control of areas of south Libya including the biggest city in the south, Sabha.

India suggests way forward for Syria

Posted by seumasach on January 23, 2014

“The Indian position is broadly akin to Russia’s, but It may not be music to the ears of US secretary of state John Kerry who in his speech at the conference said the path to peace in Syria has to involve the world community and it cannot include Assad”

Obviously the solution will involve both the world community and Assad with plenty of big words from the West to cover for their lack of big action and their failed attempt at regime change.

Indian Punchline

22nd January, 2014

This is a time senor politicians would be loathe to leave the shores of India as far as possible and the fact that External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid who also happens to be the senior spokesman of Congress Party was willing to take his eyes off the 2014 parliamentary poll and head for Montreux underscores the importance Delhi attaches to the Geneva II conference on Syria, which began today, as also signaling India’s willingness to play any whichever role that would help bring peace to that Middle Eastern country.

President Bashar al-Assad’s interview with Agence France Presse (AFP)

Posted by seumasach on January 21, 2014

Syrian Free Press

20th January, 2014

AFP: Mr. President, what do you expect from the Geneva conference?

President Assad: The most basic element, which we continuously refer too, is that the Geneva Conference should produce clear results with regard to the fight against terrorism in Syria. In particular, it needs to put pressure on countries that are exporting terrorism, – by sending terrorists, money and weapons to terrorist organisations, – especially Saudi Arabia and Turkey, and of course the Western countries that provide political cover for these terrorist organisations. This is the most important decision or result that the Geneva Conference could produce. Any political solution that is reached without fighting terrorism has no value. There can be no political action when there is terrorism everywhere, not only in Syria but in neighbouring countries as well. From the political side, it is possible for Geneva to contribute to a process of dialogue between Syrians. There has to be a Syrian process within Syria and whilst Geneva could support this, it cannot be a substitute for it.
