Northern Scandinavia is probably the most rugged terrain on Earth. It is a peninsular landmass extending outward from the Asian continent for 2000 kilometers and is notable for the enormous number of deep fjords carved into its northwestern edge. Some of the chasms plunge 800 meters deep with cliff walls 1000 meters high. Many are more than 100 kilometers long – Sognefjorden being the longest at 204 kilometers. In some places, it is more than 1300 meters deep with surrounding mountains of equal height.

Challenge of turning off America’s ‘loose money’ tap

Posted by seumasach on August 4, 2013

QE, or the systematic devaluation of what is still the world’s reserve currency, is increasingly unacceptable to the rest of the world. It has lead to speculative bubbles in commodities and food leading to inflation and widespread unrest as seen in Egypt, Turkey, Brazil etc.. If Obama wishes to engage constructively with the rest of the world he needs to taper-off QE. Otherwise China and others will intensify efforts to bypass the dollar in international trade isolating the US. This is the worst option for America whereas the raising of interest rates and the very hard landing accompanying it can be mitigated by strategic partnerships, particularly with China, leading to growing direct investment in the US and controlled dollar devaluation within context of a reformed global monetary system. In this way Obama can lead the way in managed US decline in a new multipolar framework.

Assad might be Syria’s best option

Posted by seumasach on June 21, 2013

“Assad’s government is now the only armed force in the country still committed to preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and to its continuance as an independent nation state.”

“By upholding Syria’s rights as a nation-state, China and Russia are, contrary to most Western commentary, making the most useful contribution to the preservation of both the regional and the global peace.”

The Assad should stay viewpoint is gaining momentum in the English language press- a welcome recognition of reality.

Dominion Post

Until its actions triggered World War I, hardly anyone in New Zealand gave a damn about Serbia. Until very recently, the same was true of Syria. Even now, with images of Syria’s gruesome civil war nightly smearing the world’s television screens, I find myself reacting to the rapidly rising body count with a mixture of pity and frustration. As the angry, anguished faces of the slayers and their victims flash before me, I demand to know what could possibly be worth so much suffering? Freedom? Democracy?

Tiwanaku, or Tiahuanaco in Spanish, is a ruined citadel occupying almost 10 square kilometers in the Bolivian Andes at an altitude greater than 3800 meters. Carbon-14 dating methods suggest that the site is no more than 3700 years old. However, as previous Picture of the Day articles discuss, radiometric dating is, at best, an unreliable system for establishing age.
