Russia Beyond The Headlines
3rd September, 2014
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has declared a temporary ceasefire in eastern Ukraine after a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Russian experts believe the time to put an end to the bloodshed is long overdue. However, such a decision could be interpreted as weakness and may cost Poroshenko his political career.

Cunningly, Putin plans to foil the West by refusing to invade Ukraine and partition it as expected by Western analysts. Instead, he has proposed peace talks and to maintain the integrity of Ukraine as has already been agreed in talks with Ukraine and the EU.

All the nonsense and bravado that comes out of today’s NATO summit will not be able to conceal the essential irrelevance of this organization, an irrelevance confirmed by it’s inability to come to the aid of a militantly anti-Russian regime in Ukraine, installed by NATO itself, its very own baby if you like. For what purpose does NATO have if it is not the roll-back of Russia and the fact that Ukraine is not a NATO member is a mere technicality, world dominance was never going to be achieved by playing by the rules. The Kiev regime is NATO creation in its own image: NATO old-timers must have warmed to images of distressed pensioners, crying children and corpses in the street resulting from Ukrainian bombardment of Ukrainian citizens. Their thoughts would have gone back to past exploits: to destroyed bridges and trains in Serbia, to bombed weddings in Afghanistan and, more recently, to providing murderous air cover for murderous jihadis in Libya. Oh, the glory of it all! Yet those days are gone, never to return: the will simply isn’ there. I hope this is Obama’s irony: if so, it says it all:
“It [NATO] is unbreakable, it is unwavering, it is eternal. And Estonia will never stand alone,”

This week’s NATO summit in Wales has been billed as themost important meeting in the organization’s history, “a strategic inflection point,” an occasion for its rebirth, rediscovery, reinvention as a tougher, mightier alliance. The impetus for this new beginning is the worsening situation in Ukraine, which awoke the organization from its slumber by alerting it to the fact that its member states in Eastern Europe are vulnerable to an assault from Russia. Ukraine will be one of the main items on the agenda. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko will be on the scene at the Welsh golf resort to plead for help, badly needed after his squabble with Russia on Wednesday, which resulted in yet another failed attempt at a ceasefire. Poroshenko will try to convince European leaders that Russia is not just at war with Ukraine, it’s at war with all of Europe.

Since the regime forces are being routed I assume that ceasefire here means withdrawal from Donbass. This is not something to be negotiated with Putin but with the leadership of the Donetsk and Lugansk Republics. Nevertheless, this is a clear indication that Poroshenko has sufficiently eroded the Right Sector to free himself from their influence.

Last Thursday the Ukrainian government, echoed by NATO spokesmen, declared that the the Russian military is now operating within Ukraine’s borders. Well, maybe it is and maybe it isn’t; what do you know? They said the same thing before, most recently on August 13, and then on August 17, each time with either no evidence or fake evidence. But let’s give them the benefit of the doubt.

This is a most interesting analysis But one salient fact is missing: Kiev has already broken from the Right Sector who recently announced that they were on their way back to Kiev to overthrow Poroshenko. They regard him as a Russian agent and think he set them up for annihilation in the East. The Ukies performance in the war does seem to be almost unnaturally inept and you could legitimately muse on whether there might be some truth in their suspicions. Everyone just assumes that Poroshenko is playing the CIA’s game but couldn’t he also be playing Moscow’s. As I wrote back in May:
” I suspect Russia have strategic depth in Ukraine and that the new president, Poroshenko, will be a disappointment to the West’s war party.”
What perspectives could there ever really have been for a neo-fascist government in Ukraine? If Poroshenko was an intelligent man he would have realized that they were non-existent. Would he not then have realized that a way-out must be found and that only Russia could provide it? Would he not have realized that this way-out depended on taking out the neo-fascists? Once enough of them have been consumed in the “cauldrons” the negotiations can begin in earnest. That point may have already been reached- we’ll know this week.

This last week has seen a dramatic turnaround in the fortunes of the Novorossian Armed Forces (NAF); from barely holding on, to turning the tables on the forces of the Kiev junta regime. The NAF has from the beginning imposed heavy losses on the Kiev forces, often in the order of 10 to 1, but they were unable to hold many strategic areas as they were greatly outnumbered and did not have the heavy equipment needed to sustain heavy attacks. So what happened?

Russia Beyond the Headlines
29th August, 2014
On August 29, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that “Russian forces had entered” his country, yet martial law has not been introduced. One Ukrainian expert interviewed by the Kommersant newspaper believes that Poroshenko’s announcement is a way of avoiding accusations for defeats in the southeast and weakening the pressure from his opponents, including Yulia Tymoshenko, who has called for the imposition of martial law in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. Kiev-based political analyst Dmitry Dzhangirov has characterized the situation as a competition in patriotic rhetoric between politicians on the eve of parliamentary elections for the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament. Kommersant also writes that making announcements about a Russian invasion is a convenient move for Poroshenko, since it absolves the government of the failure of the “anti-terrorist operations” in the east, where the militants from the unrecognized republics are now on the offensive.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister of the Donetsk People’s Republic Alexander Zakharchenko has described the militant counterattack as a “humanitarian-military operation,” designed to “move the enemy away from the big cities” and thus protect the civilian population.

Panic will now break out amongst the European elite as they threaten the livelihood of still more European farmers. Did they really think the NATO-nazi ragtag army would carry all before it? Did they really think they could run a neo-nazi coup in Europe and get off with it?

“Making threats and opening up new fronts of conflict is a risky game that makes the world a much more dangerous and unpredictable place”
Ekatimerini

The impact of developments in Ukraine on the global economy may be much more far-reaching than initially anticipated. If the European Union and the United States, on the one hand, and Russia, on the other, become embroiled in a vicious cycle of escalating sanctions, it may cause havoc all around the world.
