While the recent raft of Sino-Saudi trade agreements benefited Chinese soft power in protecting Xinjiang, and the Saudis by diversifying their economy, China’s slow intertwining with Saudi Arabia complements the Sino-Russo alliance. Primarily, its benefits could lead to a realistic threat to the petrodollar.

“No matter Trump’s game plan to drive a wedge between China and Russia by exploiting Xi’s interest in a ‘new type of major country relations’ with US, it is preposterous that Beijing will allow any erosion to the Sino-Russian entente. The point is, for both China and Russia, their number one priority in world politics will be to push back at US hegemony and there is no daylight possible here between them for a foreseeable future.”

The significance of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to Russia on March 27-28 goes far beyond the bilateral relationship. Iran is one of the main actors in Syria and Iraq. Amidst unprecedented media disinformation it is indeed possible to glimpse the outline of a new, emerging US foreign policy. Constructive engagement with Russia and China corresponds precisely to US national interests but whether it is ultimately possible remains to be seen. It would constitute the triumph of realism and pragmatism over the ideologues of both left and right and the powerful vested interests which lie behind them. Failure will plunge the world into chaos at best, war at worst.
