Amidst the old familiar platitudes, one ‘action point’ stood out in the NAM summit in Tehran that is about to conclude later today — initiative on Syria. The details are yet to be unveiled, but the content is immaterial since it is going to be robustly contested anyway and may not endure. The big powers have their own axe to grind.

TEHRAN, Aug. 28 (MNA) – Foreign ministers of the Non-Aligned Movement issued a draft statement on Tuesday in which they stated the Syrian crisis must be resolved without foreign intervention and welcomed Lakhdar Brahimi as the representative of the UN secretary general for Syria, replacing Kofi Annan.

The UN Security Council has no right to support a revolution or foreign intervention in Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned. Any plan to withdraw government troops while fighting continues is untenable, and naïve at best, he added.

Le président syrien Bachar Al-Assad, a réaffirmé en fin d’après-midi, hier, que son pays mène actuellement une bataille, à la fois régionale et mondiale mais que, ce problème récurent, trouvera bientôt une solution et sera résolu. Dans le même temps, le ministre russe des Affaires étrangères Andreï Lavrov, a estimé que ce sont ceux qui arment l’opposition tout en rejetant un dialogue syro-syrien, qui sont à blâmer dans ce dossier épineux, qui pouvait pourtant trouver une solution et compromet la stabilité de la Syrie. Que dire de plus ? Les autres sont dans une dynamique morbide, entre le bruit et la fureur, pensant que seule la force peut résoudre le problème.

All indications are that Egypt’s return to the forefront of the Non-Aligned Movement will be the big news this week from the summit meeting at Tehran. The summit’s focus can be expected on three main West Asian issues — Syrian crisis, Iran nuclear issue and the blossoming of the Egypt-Iran relationship.
