A senior Iranian commander has denounced as absurd the French president’s recent remarks that Paris would recognize a ‘potential provisional opposition government’ in Syria.

“France’s ridiculous proposal for the recognition of a potential opposition government in Syria is small-minded and childish to the point that it will only be met by derision on the part of the international community,” said Deputy Commander of Iran’s Armed Forces Chiefs of Staff, Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri on Wednesday.

The current crisis in Syria will pass and “what would remain would be shame for the country’s vicious enemies,” he noted.

On Monday, Hollande told an annual late-August meeting of French diplomats at the Elysees Palace, “France asks the Syrian opposition to form a provisional government… France will recognize the provisional government of Syria once it is formed.”

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including security forces, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and insurgents are behind the unrest, while the West and Syrian opposition accuse the security forces of killing protesters.
