JERUSALEM — Israel’s military chief said in an interview published Wednesday that Iran will ultimately decide against building a nuclear weapon – putting him at odds with Israel’s more pessimistic prime minister.
An attack on Iran remains a terrifying possibility, as a desperate flight forward by the Anglo-American coalition from an already hopeless situation in Iraq.

A flotilla of Iranian warships crossed the Suez Canal and docked at the Syrian port of Tartus on Saturday.
Iran’s Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said the mission displays Iran’s “might” despite 30 years of relentless sanctions.
The flotilla comprised the 18th Fleet of the Iranian navy. The warships would hold exercises and will “train Syrian naval forces under an agreement signed between Tehran and Damascus one year ago”.
The influential cleric and deputy chairman of the Majlis’ (parliament’s” National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Hossein Ebrahimi said:
“The presence of Iran and Russia’s flotillas along the Syrian coasts has a clear message against the United States’ possible adventurism. In case of any US strategic mistake in Syria, there is a possibility that Iran, Russia and a number of other countries will give a crushing response to the US.”

One thoughtful Indian daily even wondered if the Israelis aren’t doing this to themselves in a supreme act of theatrics
Gradually but inexorably we are moving towards a new world, one in which the skulduggery of the Anglo-American-Israeli axis is butt of quiet humour.

The Indian establishment’s nerves didn’t give way on Iran after two major assaults this week. There have been hardly any worthwhile takers in Delhi — except the famous Friends of Israel brigade in our media — for the smear campaign that Tehran’s agents are scurrying around the world pasting plastic bombs on Israeli diplomats. One thoughtful Indian daily even wondered if the Israelis aren’t doing this to themselves in a supreme act of theatrics, which intelligence agencies all over undertake in certain situations. (Which by no means can be ruled out, since as Home Minister P Chidambaram said, these are ’sophisticated’ devices.)

India figured as Iran’s number one crude oil customer in January. That may be difficult to believe but it is indeed a statement of fact. Actually, India stepped up its imports of Iranian oil by 37.5 percent, which helped Iran offset a 50 percent cut in Chinese purchases resulting from a dispute in pricing. China now imports around 250000 barrels a day as against India’s 550000 barrels a day, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

It seems that in Europe, ad hoc policy such as France and England’s naval bandwagoning with the American armada in the Persian Gulf has replaced rational defense strategies that could entertain an Iranian-European security debate and even cooperation.
Exactly. Britain and France have effectively bounced Europe into another serious own-goal. Hopefully the defeat of Sarkozy in the coming elections will lead to Britain being finally frozen out of European security policy and the subsequent adoption of a saner and more constructive policy towards Iran.
