ATHENS – Sanctions-hit Russia would consider extending financial aid to debt-ridden Greece if Athens were to make a request, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said. His remarks come after the opposition of new Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ government to the introduction of new sanctions against Russia. Athens has stressed that the restrictions will bring economic problems to a number of European states, including Greece.

The geo-political environment is now quite altered: Greek exit no longer means them falling prey even more to Wall Street- they can, instead, move towards the Russia-China axis. That may not happen but Russian diplomacy has changed the balance of forces inside the EU and given leverage to the new Greek government.

The reported capture of the Donetsk city airport by separatists in eastern Ukraine could prove a ‘game changer’ in the conflict in that country. The airport as such is not strategically important but its loss testifies to the separatist side having the upper hand militarily and that cannot but sap the morale of the Ukrainian forces and erode the credibility of the pro-western government in Kiev.

China is extending its Silk Road into the Balkans, with a planned project to construct a railroad from the Greek port of Piraeus all the way to Budapest. This would connect Beijing’s primary port of entrance for its commercial goods to one of Central Europe’s main transport conduits, thereby pushing the Silk Road into the heart of Europe and throughout the rest of the continent. As with everything else that China is doing in the world today, it must not be discounted that Russia can also reap some resultant benefits from this as part of the global Russian-Chinese Strategic Partnership, which in this case, would allow for the resurrection of the South Stream project that all of its European partners have been begging for since its cancellation.

Op-ed News
15th January, 2015
Russia executed a bold move on January 14, one that was largely unanticipated. It shows the level of disgust with both the coup-based Ukraine government and the European Union leaders and their small state followers.
Ukraine is finished as a supply route for Russian natural gas headed for European Union countries. EU countries get 25% to 30% of their natural gas from the Ukraine pipeline. The gas transiting Ukraine will be diverted to the recently announced Russia-Turkey pipeline. The Turks will create a portal at the Greek border where Europeans can purchase natural gas. The pipeline will be complete in 2017.

Question: Mr. Pascali, an unprecedented drama is developing in France under our eyes. After marked terrorists killed 12 people at the offices of the Charlie Hebdo, new terrorist acts are striking France. Hostages have been taken in a Paris store after a murder, two suspects are surrounded by the French police with the prospect of a long siege.
Confusing and terrifying news are coming from the field and from the press wires. One of the suspects for the Charlie Hebdo massacre give himself up to the police claiming to have been in school at the moment of the massacre. The media report that the suspect authors of the massacre have been for several years on a US and British Terrorist Database and, thus, they were well known and had been even previously arrested.
