By Sardar Ahmad, AFP

Afghan News Network

The Afghan cabinet demanded Monday a renegotiation of agreements regulating the presence of international troops in Afghanistan after more than 90 civilians were killed in US-led air strikes.

The cabinet said the review should focus on the “authorities and responsibilities” of international troops and demand a halt to air strikes on civilians, illegal detentions and unilateral house searches, a statement said.

Jean Charles de Menezes 7.1.1978 – 22.7.2005

Dear Friends,

On 22nd July 2005, 27 year old Jean Charles de Menezes was shot 7 times in the head by police officers at Stockwell tube station as part of a pre-planned anti-terrorism operation. No one has been held responsible for his death.

After more than three years, the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes will finally open on 22nd September. It is expected to last three months.

The inquest will be the first chance the family of Jean Charles will be able to put their questions to the police officers responsible for his death. It will also be the first time we will hear evidence from the fire-arms officers who killed Jean and the civilian witnesses to the killing. The inquest will be taking place at the Oval Cricket Ground in South London and Jean’s mother and brother will be coming over from Brazil for part of it.

The Justice4Jean campaign is organising a campaign meeting for all supporters to discuss what we can do before, during and after the inquest to raise public awareness of the inquest and to remind people that that three years on, still no one has been held responsible for Jean’s brutal killing.

Justice4Jean Campaign Meeting

Thursday 4th September 2008 6.30-8pm

Room G2,

School of Oriental and African Studies

Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square WC1H 0XG

ALL WELCOME

(Hosted by SOAS Palestine Society)

The campaign is asking that supporters to attend the first day of the inquest – the 22nd September – and help us mobilise for this day.

We want to send a strong message out at the begining of the inquest and need your help to do it, so please join us on the 4th and get involved in the campaign for Justice 4 Jean.

All the best

Butterflies scarce after two wet summers

Posted by seumasach on August 25, 2008

“A bad summer’ is a bit of an understatement I would say: there are just no, or next to no, butterflies, bees, beetles and hardly any birds. So, finally, after several million years of evolution and surviving the biblical deluge they have succumbed to a bit of heavy rain. It’s amazing we’ve got this far really and I suppose we should, at least, be grateful for that. At risk of being bores we at ITNT continue to point out that what is really new about the last twenty years is the proliferation of RF EM radiation, fraudulently claimed to be safe in contrast to ionising radiation(see our RH column).

Michael McCarthy

Independent

25th August, 2008

Britain’s butterflies are going through their worst summer for nearly half a century, a leading conservationist believes. Matthew Oates, conservation adviser to the National Trust, says the torrential downpours of summer 2007 had a knock-on effect on 2008, wiping out many eggs and caterpillars that would have become this year’s adults.

Healthy Honey Bees Is Goal of Multi-Institutional Research Team

Posted by seumasach on August 23, 2008

“There could be a lot of things that make bees forget where they live and not return to the hive,” Hunt said.

He seemingly forgot to mention the most obvious one, EM radiation which has been known to have a disorientating effect on bees, and other species, since the 1970s when Warnke and others began their studies on this question.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., Aug. 20 (AScribe Newswire) — A combination of pathogens, pesticides and parasites may underlie such a massive disappearance of honeybees that agricultural production may be threatened, says a Purdue University researcher.

Korean bank might buy Lehman

Posted by seumasach on August 23, 2008

Having , no doubt, consulted with their colleagues at Korean Investment Corporation, the Korean Development Bank will be in a good position to make a bid for Lehman commensurate with its actual value, which can’t be very much.

UK banks: Rivals forced to pick up Bradford & Bingley pieces

Posted by seumasach on August 23, 2008

What would possess anyone to underwrite a B&B share issue. Underwriting private losses has become the Treasury’s job: are they behind the scenes giving guarantees?

Philip Inman

The Guardian

23rd August, 2008

Bradford & Bingley’s shambolic rights issue, twice restructured, has left its high street rivals as major shareholders after underwriters for the offering failed to offload shares rejected by investors.

O’Reilly: Far-left crowd may spell defeat for Obama in November

Posted by seumasach on August 23, 2008

This article seems to confirm how advantageous the Georgia debacle has been to the McCain camp. In one fell swoop the Republicans have stolen the Democrat agenda, torpedoed it and left the wrong-footed Obama camp looking whimpish as McCain beats the war drums. US foreign policy may be in total disarray but all that matters to the Republicans is to hold power come by hook or by crook. A 5% lead in the polls plus a bit of electoral high-jinks should be enough to see them through.

Bill O’Reiily

Ventura County Star

23rd August, 2008

If Barack Obama somehow loses the presidential race, he might partially blame Vlad “the Assailer” Putin. Since Russia invaded Georgia, the world’s attention has been focused on NATO’s response to the brutality. On balance, the response has been tepid, to say the least. President Bush says Russia better get out.

Or what?

Obama is calling for “restraint by both sides.” Swell. Asking Vladimir Putin to restrain his violent tactics is like asking al-Qaida to celebrate Christmas — not gonna happen.
