Mid-term review of the European Environment and Health Action Plan 2004-2010

Posted by seumasach on September 4, 2008

“MEPs recommend that, in awarding individual European Union support, the Commission bear in mind its impact on the quality of indoor air, exposure to electromagnetic radiation and the health of particularly vulnerable sections of the population”

“They[MEPs] are greatly concerned at the Bio-Initiative international report on electromagnetic fields, which highlights the health risks posed by emissions from mobile-telephony devices such as mobile telephones, UMTS, Wifi, Wimax and Bluetooth, and also DECT landline telephones. It notes that the limits on exposure to electromagnetic fields which have been set for the general public are obsolete.”

In adopting an own-initiative report on the mid-term review of the European Environment and Health Action Plan 2004-2010, the European Parliament acknowledges the efforts made by the Commission since the action plan was launched in 2004. It considers, however, that such an action plan is bound to fail at least in part, since it is designed solely to accompany existing Community policies. The report was adopted with 522 votes in favour and 16 against.

Scramble for cash as central banks dry up

Posted by seumasach on September 3, 2008

“UK banks have been campaigning for an extension to the scheme, under which the Bank provides banks with highly liquid government bonds in return for illiquid AAA-rated mortgage-backed securities.”

Good to see the bankers remembering their student days and getting down to Threadneedle Street with their banners and placards:

What do we want?

Public money!

When do we want it?

Now!

Patrick Hosking

Times

2nd September, 2008

British banks soon could be scrambling for short-term funding once more amid reports that supplies from Threadneedle Street and from Frankfurt may be drying up.

Ukraine’s presidential party quits ruling coalition

Posted by seumasach on September 3, 2008

Yulia Tymoshenko seems the epitomy of the pro-American asset , and virulently anti-Russian; yet here she is being accused of siding with the Russians and refusing to condemn their military action in Georgia. The new zeitgeist is pragmatic rather than ideological: events seem to be leading and people just following and the events are leading us to the collapse of Anglo-Saxon  leadership in the world and, perhaps, also the end of a much longer historical period, dating from the  death of Demosthenes and the collapse of Athenian democracy, in which empire and oligarchy and their corresponding philosophical outlook have, generally, held sway.

KIEV, September 3 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko’s party officially pulled out of the ruling pro-Western coalition on Wednesday amid a government dispute over presidential powers and the Georgia-Russia conflict.

Russia: A useful enemy in US polls

Posted by seumasach on September 3, 2008

Unfortunately for Obama, much more useful to McCain. Obama, remember, is the “peace candidate” and beating war drums will not strengthen his base. In addition his Brzezinski inspired anti-Russian programme is of the covert, Soros type. That agenda is now in shreds and McCain is leading the New Cold War.

Andrei Tsygankow

Asia Times

4th September, 2008

The United States presidential candidates increasingly present Russia as a threat in their campaigns. Republican Senator John McCain is clearly thriving on the recent Georgia-Russia war. Escalation in the Caucasus has been lobbied by McCain since at least 2003, and he is now exploiting the conflict to his full advantage.

EU split over Russia

Posted by seumasach on September 3, 2008

Russia Today

2nd September, 2008

The Foreign Ministry says it regrets the EU’s decision to suspend talks on a new partnership agreement with Russia. Moscow says the new deal is just as important to Europe as it is to Russia. The bloc has been split over its response to the conflict in South Ossetia. At Monday’s emergency summit in Brussels, EU leaders decided to halt talks on a new deal with Russia. The move was in response to Moscow’s role in the conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia. But according to some members of the European parliament, the summit showed that the union is anything but united.
