Hundreds of Pakistani tribal elders and religious leaders have staged a demonstration to vent their anger over unauthorized US drone attacks.
The rally comes as missile strikes in North Waziristan tribal region have brought life in the area to a near standstill.
The demonstrators chanted anti-American slogans on Monday, calling for an end to drone strikes. They also threatened to block the NATO supply line to neighboring Afghanistan.
The demonstrators condemned the recent US strikes that have killed several people in the tribal northwestern region over the past few days.
They lashed out at government for failing to stop the attacks. The tribesmen warned that they would march to Islamabad if government fails to put an end to drone strikes.
The US frequently carries out such attacks on Pakistan’s tribal areas. Attacks by unmanned American planes have left dozens of people dead in the volatile region over the past weeks.
The aerial attacks, initiated by former US president George W. Bush, have been escalated under President Barack Obama.
Islamabad has frequently slammed the US over the drone strikes, saying they violate its sovereignty.
