Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq resigned his post on Thursday. In a statement, the Egyptian Army said that “The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces decided to accept the resignation of Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq and appointed Essam Sharaf to form the new government.” Replacing him will be former transport minister Essam Sharaf, who participate in the demonstrations against Hosni Mubarak in Tahrir Square.

Shafiq, who was a member of the Mubarak government, was pressured to resign by protesters who sought to push out all officials who served with Mubarak.
