Obama again puts military strike – and vote in Congress – on hold to give Russian proposal a chance

Debka

US president Barack Obama went against the words of his advisers, Secretary of State John Kerry and National Security Adviser Susan Rice Monday, and offered in TV interviews early Tuesday, Sept. 10, to “absolutely” put on hold military action against Syria, as well as the vote in Congress,  if Bashar Assad abandoned chemical weapons. He said he found some positive signs in the Russian proposal [for Assad to hand over his chemical arsenal to international control] and said he was willing to run it to ground in the next few days to see if the Syrian issue can’t be solved without the military option.

Israel ‘would not oppose’ Russian peacekeepers in Golan Heights

Posted by seumasach on June 10, 2013

RT

10th June, 2013

Israel would accept “any force” that would take an “active part” in maintaining peace in the Syrian-Israeli border region of the Golan Heights, deputy head of the Israeli Interior Ministry Faina Kirshenbaum said. Israel “would not oppose” the sending of the Russian peacekeepers as well, Kirshenbaum added in a radio interview with Echo Moskvy, referring to an earlier suggestions by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Moscow has proposed replacing Austria’s UNDOF contingent, which withdrew from the Golan Heights, with about 300 Russian peacekeepers. However, the mandate of the UN mission does not formally allow Russia to participate.

18th May, 2013

The Turkish prime minister Recep Erdogan’s visit to Washington on Thursday was expected to put pressure on the Obama administration to take a tougher stance against the Syrian regime. Erdogan was quoted as seeking the imposition of a US-led ‘no-fly-zone’ in Syria and increased arms supplies to the rebel fighters. In the event, however, Obama stood his ground and insisted there is no “magic formula” to resolve the crisis. Of course, he couched the rebuff in extravagant diplomatic niceties during the joint press conference in the White House, but it was a rebuff nonetheless.

Anti-Syria position at UN weakens

Posted by seumasach on May 16, 2013

All five BRICS, Brazil,Russia,India,China and South Africa voted against or abstained, reflecting the inexorable shift in global power away from the West. The commentaries of Amnesty International represent an a priori position and can be discounted. This resolution is as the Russians pointed out destructive but not nearly as destructive as the remaining wreckers would have wished. By the way, the “regime” in Syria certainly doesn’t appear to be “tottering”

Cameron backs down over Syria

Posted by seumasach on May 11, 2013

We’ve now seen the Syrian national army enjoying some significant success in the last few weeks in taking back rebel-held areas of the country. I think this has produced panic, actually, in Washington, London and Paris, which is why David Cameron has been so keen to fly to Russia to meet with Vladimir Putin.”

Well, at least panic in London and Paris, to say nothing of Doha and Riyadh.Yes, this is prudent of Cameron to jump onboard the peace process already initiated by Obama and Putin- better late than never. For appearances he continues to stress “that there was “no secret” that the two sides still had “differing views on how best to handle this situation.”” However, the “Assad must go” mantra which we have heard ad infititum over the last two years is being dropped and governance in Syria is being seen as the prerogative of the Syrian people rather than Washington, Paris and London. It’s good to see the West embracing democracy for a change- Hilary must be turning in her political grave.

Kerry couldn’t set Moscow River on fire

Posted by seumasach on May 9, 2013

“the US shifted its position on the core issue; namely, its demand that the Assad regime should quit as a prelude to any dialogue.”

M.K.Bhadrakumar

Asia Times

The foreplay of Russian-American high-level exchanges can be very revealing. This time too the two sides indulged in some robust shadow play in the run-up to the overnight “working visit” of the United States Secretary of State John Kerry to Moscow on Tuesday.
