Can the euro save Britain?

Posted by seumasach on December 12, 2008

Joining the eurozone is one way of limiting the terrible price of the City’s antics. But will politicians brave public opinion to do it?

John Palmer

Guardian

12th December, 2008

According to the Sun, Gordon Brown has assured the entrepreneur Sir Alan Sugar that he has no plans “to ditch the pound” and join the euro. And certainly, the closest scrutiny of the agenda for the two-day summit meeting of European Union leaders that begins in Brussels today does not reveal any item dealing with a possible British overture to the members of the European single currency about joining the single currency.

Mandelson rejects euro talk claim

Mandelson rejects euro talk claim

The dominant political parties in the UK have broken silence on the euro. This in typical Orwellian fashion is a non-story. Overtly it says nothing has changed. The whispers in Whitehall are being denied. Yet it appears there is no substantive rejection of the euro other than popular sentiment which is buoyed by the media. The non-crisis of the euro

The global financial crisis has breathed new life into hoary arguments about the euro’s imminent demise.

Such arguments often invoke Milton Friedman, who warned in 1998 that Europe’s commitment to the euro would be tested by the first serious economic downturn. That downturn is now upon us, but the results have been precisely the opposite of what Friedman predicted.

How likely is a sterling crisis or: is London really Reykjavik-on-Thames?

Posted by seumasach on November 16, 2008

Maverecom

November 13th, 2008

With the pound sterling dropping like a stone against most other currencies and credit default swap rates on long-term UK sovereign debt beginning to edge up, this is a good time to revisit a suggestion I made earlier on a number of occasions (e.g. herehere and here), that there is a non-trivial risk of the UK becoming the next Iceland.

It might be politically toxic – but we must join the euro now

Will Hutton

guardian.co.uk, Sunday November 16 2008 00.01 GMT

The Observer, Sunday November 16 2008

Hutton finally sees the light.

When the euro launched nearly 10 years ago, an unnamed euro-sceptic currency trader – now almost certainly redundant – famously called it a toilet currency. Last week it climbed to an all-time high against the pound. Read the rest of this entry »
