BEIRUT – A potentially important diplomatic development underway in the Middle East, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz Monday, is that Washington is “tending towards cooperating with the soon-to-be-formed Palestinian unity government, even if Hamas as an organization does not accept the conditions of the Mideast Quartet to recognize Israel, honor previous agreements and abandon violence.”

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) launched his “diplomatic intifada” against Israel and exit from the Kerry peace initiative Thursday, Jan. 23, from Moscow. His meetings with President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev marked his breakaway from the US-led peace process with Israel, four months before it was due to expire, and signaled his bid for Russian backing for a Palestinian state.

A senior European diplomat met with an Israeli counterpart a few weeks ago and one of the topics they discussed was the continued European Union sanctions against the settlements. They raised in their conversation the possible scenario that Israeli produce from the West Bank would be marked as such in European supermarkets. The conversation points to one of the gravest threats Israel will face in the coming year, namely its growing international isolation.

Dutch Water Company Cuts Ties with Israel

Companies and governments in Holland, the UK, and Romania are downgrading ties with Israeli companies to protest Israel’s policies in areas it acquired in 1967. Palestinians say all of these areas must be part of a future Palestinian state; Israel says it has not annexed these areas and would make “significant concessions” in exchange for real peace with the Palestinians.
