Optimism returned to the markets today as Gordon Brown, the rock on which the new doctrine of “part-nationalisations” is built, set the master plan in motion. But will it work, will it, as they say, “do the trick”?

Little Britain in Recession

Posted by alfied on September 3, 2008

Even the Sun Newspaper, which can be fairly described as a jingoistic rag for the hard of thinking, is starting to whimper. Although nowhere near conveying what lies in store to their loyal readership, it is becoming increasingly more difficult for Britain’s biggest selling daily to deny reality.

However this is probably about as far as the their Media will go. Declaring that Britain is in terminal decline, financially, intellectually and morally bankrupt, is not something they are likely to do anytime soon.

BRITAIN will be the only one of the world’s seven richest nations to slide into recession this year, experts warned last night. Read the rest of this entry »

Turkey cannot afford disruption in ties with Russia, says Erdoğan

Posted by alfied on September 2, 2008

“Our relations with the Russian Federation have actually gone beyond the special,” Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told reporters at the Victory Day reception in Ankara.

It’s amazing what results the application of a little gentle pressure can have. Expect Turkish vessels back in their own ports by Friday.

ANKARA – Turkish Daily News

Under the convention, vessels from countries that do not have a coastal area on the Black Sea can stay in the sea for up to 21 days.

Dependent on Russian natural gas and oil to meet its growing energy needs, Turkey cannot risk bilateral ties with Moscow due to the recent economic tension that has hit Turkish exports, said the prime minister over the weekend. Read the rest of this entry »

Catatonia: the last stage of imperialism

31st August, 2008

The events in Georgia and the irrational wave of Russophobia which have followed it mark a new, last phase of US/UK imperialism. Sakashvili’s bizarre and vicious assault on South Ossetia, conducted presumably under US auspices, may seem to herald a stepping up of US/UK interventionism and power projection. Paradoxically, in my view, it represents the complete opposite: a retreat into isolation comparable to that of a paranoic whose psychotic outbursts only confirm the essential, underlying withdrawal from human intercourse. Sakashvili’s dangerous antics don’t constitute a foreign policy any more than bombing weddings does.

The Local Elections on England and Wales

Posted by seumasach on January 7, 2008

Cailean Buchanan

4th May 2008

Much has been made of the collapse of the New Labour vote at the local elections. What is really striking is this: two British Prime Minister’s have burnt out in less than a year. Brown is now less popular than Blair and its fair to suppose that his successor will rapidly become more unpopular still. This unprecedented situation is undoubtedly a reflexion of the collapse of British financial power and the attendant economic crisis. But it also reflects the impotence of government in the face of it. For Britain is now a fully-fledged oligarchy where good governance is, at every turn, subordinated to the power of financiers feverishly engaged in looting the country, its treasury, its public assets, its pension funds, its local authorities and its people; the kind of regime which was once reserved for our colonies.
