Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an end to the military operation in Georgia. He said the objective – “to compel Georgia to peace” – has been achieved. Medvedev also ordered the Russian military to “eliminate the aggressor” in the event of Georgian forces resuming hostilities.

Medvedev said the security of the South Ossetian population and of Russian peacekeepers has been restored. He added that the aggressor has been punished and suffered considerable losses.

The Russian President said he would award the military with state medals for the successful operation.
