PLO official calls on Hamas to reassess position post-Morsy

Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) official Yasser Abd Rabboh called on Hamas to reevaluate its regional position Sunday, now that Egyptian President Mohamed Morsy, its main Islamic ally, has been toppled. “The victory of the revolution in Egypt and the fall of the Muslim Brotherhood warrants [such] reflection,” he told Palestinian state radio.

US mulls options in run-up to Egypt’s 30 June anti-govt rallies

“During her meetings, Patterson, according to Egyptian and Western sources, has been stressing three points: Washington does not wish to see Egypt go through either a military coup or a forced interruption of the democratically-elected president’s term; that it is not too late for the elected president and the opposition to work out a compromise deal; that there is considerable room for improvement in Morsi’s management of the nation’s affairs, especially the economy; and that there is also a need for the opposition to forge a united front and vision for Egypt’s future.”

The day Mohamed Morsi was elected as the first civilian president of Egypt in June last year most reform minded people were hopeful. With many leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood Morsi spent many years in prison. No doubt they would do everything to change this ‘society of paranoia’, wouldn’t they? In his first speech as elected president Morsi also promised to form an inclusive government and to appoint a female and a Coptic vice-president. The main question back in June was how Morsi would deal with the army. In a ‘mini-coup’ the army curtailed the president’s position and absolved the People’s Assembly.
