The Fed Is Out of Ammunition

A discredited dollar is a likely outcome of the current crisis.

With an estimated $4 trillion in housing wealth and $9 trillion in stock-market wealth destroyed so far in the United States, there is little doubt that we are witnessing a classic debt-deflation bust at work, characterized by falling prices, frozen credit markets and plummeting asset values. Recession’s Grip Forces U.S. to Flood World With More Dollars
By Rich Miller

Nov. 24 (Bloomberg) — The world needs more dollars. The United States is preparing to provide them.

In an all-out assault on capitalism’s worst crisis since the Great Depression, the U.S. is taking on the role of both lender and borrower of last resort for the global economy.

The Federal Reserve, which has already pumped out hundreds of billions of dollars, might formally adopt a policy of flooding the world financial system with even more money. The Treasury, on course to borrow some $1.5 trillion this fiscal year, may tap global capital markets for even more to finance a fiscal stimulus package of as much as $700 billion and provide additional bailout money for banks. About a week ago, Peter Schiff wrote an article making a very good point about China’s $600 billion economic stimulus package. He rightly suggests that China would be wise to fund such spending through the sale of US treasuries:

Why Gold Might Soar Over the Next Four Weeks
By Patrick A. Heller, Market Update

October 28, 2008 Numismaster

Whether or not you acknowledge past efforts by the U.S. government with other governments, central banks and private trading partners to suppress the gold spot price, events coming to pass in the next four weeks could create overwhelming pressure causing much higher gold prices.

Last Friday, the Taiwan government announced that it had completely liquidated its holdings of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae bonds. If a long-time ally of the United States is willing to admit that it is bailing out of dollar-denominated debt, will other nations continue to show restraint? Read the rest of this entry »

Whither the dollar and gold? To answer that long-awaited inquiry – which will take some time to cover in full – let’s start by getting a handle on “exploding debt dynamics.” Cartoonish as it sounds, it’s a real term that IMF economists use. Read the rest of this entry »

The U.S. Dollar Death Dance
Currencies / US Dollar

The US Dollar rally in the last several weeks has been remarkable. At closer examination, it highly resembles a spurt prior to death. Imagine an old man who just had a heart attack, lost feeling in certain body parts, his mind not working right, plenty of nonsense gibberish coming from his mouth, and now he is dancing hard on some last gasps. The vast liquidation movement is akin to the old man going through an embalming process while dancing atop the tables at the funeral parlor, as bidding proceeds for his cadaver.
