Brown plans to turn the crisis into a global crusade on behalf of Atlanticist financial interests fronted by the IMF. But he is swimming against the tide: new power centres are emerging which are no longer vassals of London and Washington. Dear friends,
Do you remember hearing the news that a suspected suicide bomber had been shot on London Underground 3 years ago?
Do you remember how you felt when it became clear an innocent Brazilian man had been shot dead with 7 bullets to the head in front of terrified tube passengers?
The public reaction to the death of Jean Charles de Menezes in a catastrophic police operation was enormous – people demanded to know how and why such a terrible tragedy could have occurred.
Since July 2005, the Menezes family have relentlessly campaigned to attain the real facts about his death and see action taken, to prevent any repeat of the terrible circumstances in which they suddenly lost their loved one.
Three years later, the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes finally starts on Monday 22nd September in London.
We urge you, if you can, to attend this inquest into his death to show that the public have not forgotten this injustice. If you can spare an hour or two, either on the first day or any time over the next few months, your attendance will be greatly appreciated. The decision to make public a presidential order of last July authorizing American strikes inside Pakistan without seeking the approval of the Pakistani government ends a long debate within, and on the periphery of, the Bush administration. Senator Barack Obama, aware of this ongoing debate during his own long battle with Hillary Clinton, tried to outflank her by supporting a policy of U.S. strikes into Pakistan. Senator John McCain and Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin have now echoed this view and so it has become, by consensus, official U.S. policy.

German politicians are skeptical about a $700 billion US bailout of markets and of calls to take similar measures as Chancellor Merkel criticized Washington for failing to implement stringent market controls.
A growing chorus of German politicians questioned over the weekend whether the unprecedented US rescue package meant to inject liquidity into the financial system would help to stem the crisis which has sent world markets into a tailspin.
