This looks increasingly like an internal power struggle within India. If the BJP looks to engineer a coup and bring India firmly into the US camp, the government seems to be drawing closer to Russia and the SCO. The latter path is the logical one and will likely prevail: the Mumbai massacre would then be a product of the increasing desperation of the pro-US/UK/Israel faction.

It is becoming increasingly a hard sell to pin the blame for the Mumbai attacks on Pakistan and thus set the stage for an attack on Pakistan after Barack Obama enters the White House in a few weeks. It now appears Indian intelligence played a large part in the terrorist attacks. On Saturday, the Associated Press reported that a “counterinsurgency police officer who may have been on an undercover mission” was arrested for illegally buying mobile phone cards used by the gunmen.

India would do well to launch a proper investigation before doing anything rash. At the core of this should be to continue of the work of Karkare and to establish precisely who engineered his death. The Americans seem overeager to find the hand of Pakistan behind this massacre, don’t they? As usual they have undisclosed “evidence” which , as on 9/11, amounts to nothing more than the claim that it was “the bad guys”. In a way, this is probably true : but it would be they themselves who are the bad guys.

| Russia on Friday pledged to complete a strategic gas pipeline through Serbia by 2015 — despite the global financial crisis — paving the way for its immediate purchase of Serbia’s state energy monopoly.The head of Russia’s oil arm of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, said in Belgrade that the Russian energy giant is to buy a 51 percent stake in Serbia’s Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) for an estimated 400 million euros, with the deal expected to be signed by the end of this month. Serbia had said it would only sell the company if Russia committed to building the pipeline. “An agreement was reached today to sign” the package deal to purchase NIS and to build the natural gas pipeline through Serbia, Miller said after his talks with Serbian President Boris Tadic.
The $13 billion pipeline to be laid under the Black Sea would carry Russian natural gas to Bulgaria and Serbia before branching out to points in Western Europe.
