Last week Ben Bernanke suggested the US base interest rate will stay close to zero for an “extended period”. It’s been there since December 2008.
Traders took these words to mean that the Federal Reserve won’t hike rates until the first few months of 2012 at the earliest.

Today the Swiss franc made yet another new high against the super dollar, as it has been doing for 120 days. What you are reading in the graphs is less and less of the foreign currency that one dollar can buy. Of course, gold and silver also consistently hit new highs.

A senior Iranian official says the recent unity agreement between the two Palestinian main factions, Fatah and Hamas, is the result of Islamic awakening in the Arab world.
“Unity between the two Palestinian movements, Fatah and Hamas, to achieve national reconciliation and form a Palestinian government is one of the most significant consequences of the Islamic awakening in the region (Middle East and North Africa),” Secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei told IRNA on Sunday.
The Iranian official predicted more of such developments in the region as a result of the Islamic awakening.
On April 27, the Palestinian factions issued a statement, saying they had reached an “understanding” in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, to set up a transitional unity government and hold elections.
On the future of Iran-Egypt ties, Rezaei made a reference to the willingness among the both countries’ officials to expand mutual ties, describing the prospect as “promising.”
Elsewhere in his remarks, Rezaei discounted the possibility of the West’s and NATO’s success in their attempts to disintegrate Libya.
The senior Iranian official, however, warned that in case the oil-rich part of Libya is separated, the other parts of the country will be almost a barren desert where poverty will severely harm the people.
In recent months, a wave of revolutions and anti-government uprisings has swept the Arab world.
In January, a revolution in Tunisia ended the 23-year ruling of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
In February, another revolution led to the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after three decades of authoritarian rule.
Other revolutions have erupted in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain, while more anti-government upheavals have swept Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and Algeria.
Meanwhile, more Arab countries are expected to witness similar revolts.

Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces General Sami Anan warned Israel against interfering with Egypt’s plan to open the Rafah border crossing with Gaza on a permanent basis, saying it was not a matter of Israel’s concern, Army Radio reported on Saturday.

A call for “million-man” marches in support of the Palestinians has been made by Egypt’s Coalition of the Youth of the Revolution. The first march, to be held in Alexandria on 13 May, will also demand the opening of the Egypt-Gaza border for food, medical and humanitarian aid; marchers will head for the Israeli Consulate in the city.

TOKYO—A prominent Japanese radiation safety specialist has resigned his governmental advisory post in protest over what he calls “inexcusable” standards for school children in Fukushima Prefecture. The Yomiuri Online news web site reported in Japanese this evening that Toshiso Kosako, a radiation safety expert at the University of Tokyo, feels the standards are too lenient and that his advice has been ignored.

Abstract
It has been argued that cellphones are safe because a single microwave photon does not have enough energy to break a chemical bond. We show that cellphone technology operates in the classical wave limit, not the single photon limit. Based on energy densities relative to thermal energy, we estimate thresholds at which effects could be possible. These seem to correspond somewhat with many experimental observations.

The latest issue of the New York Review of Books carries an incisive essay by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on India’s political economy. Sen goes about it comparing the quality of life in China and India. Indians, of course, are so obsessed with catching up with China’s GDP growth that they overlook that the judicious yardstick ought to be how growth advances living standards and reduces poverty in the two countries. Sen gives a jolt to them.
