It’s not like Donald Trump to “stifle” himself, as TV’s Archie Bunker used to say, but the president has been relatively subdued about his decision, reportedly made last month, to terminate the CIA program that has armed, trained, directed and protected jihadist fighters in Syria. Trump’s uncharacteristic reticence on the matter is understandable, given the agency’s homicidal culture and history.

Coming from Paul Craig Roberts, who routinely dismisses Europe as a US surrogate, this is strong confirmation that the potentiality of an independent Europe may be becoming an actuality. This prospect is greatly strengthened by British withdrawal from the EU. As the UK descends into political and economic chaos the benefits of Brexit are to be found entirely on the other side of the English channel.

Israel has suffered a big setback in the Syrian conflict with the deployment of Russian military police in the safe zone being established in south-western Syria near the Golan Heights. The Russian Defence Ministry announced the deployment on Monday. Col.-Gen. Sergei Rudskoy, chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the Russian General Staff, said in Moscow that Russian forces had set up checkpoints and observation posts in the southwest de-escalation zone. The Russian general said that the US, Israel and Jordan have been informed of the deployment.

The Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement says its battle to eliminate members of the foreign-sponsored and Takfiri Jabhat Fatah al-Sham – previously known as the Nusra Front – militant group from the Syria-Lebanon border is 85 percent complete as it is continuing its campaign to take their last remaining footholds on the frontier.

Over the last seven years, several billion dollars’ worth of armament has been illegally introduced into Syria – a fact which in itself is enough to disprove the myth according to which this war is a democratic revolution. Numerous documents attest to the fact that the traffic was organised by General David Petraeus, first of all in public, via the CIA, of which he was the director, then privately, via the financial company KKR with the aid of certain senior civil servants. Thus the conflict, which was initially an imperialist operation by the United States and the United Kingdom, became a private capitalist operation, while in Washington, the authority of the White House was challenged by the deep state. New elements now show the secret rôle of Azerbaïdjan in the evolution of the war.

Trump shows realism toward Iran

Trump, like his predecessor, Obama, seems destined to preside over the demise of all neoconservative plans. At the same time, like Obama, he appears unable to break free of the “swamp”, the deep state quagmire, and actually define US interests in positive terms through an embrace of the emerging multipolar reality. Thus, the neocons have made sure that if they can’t lead no one can. If it continues, this paralysis means that there is no soft landing for bankrupt America, no reset of the global financial system: the next phase of the financial crisis is imminent and the US economy and the dollar will be right in the eye of the storm.
