The interview released today by Russian state news agency Itar-Tass with President Vladimir Putin regarding the forthcoming BRICS summit meeting at Durban (March 26-27) reaffirms the high priority Moscow attaches to the regional grouping. There are no surprises here. BRICS is a Russian initiative.

Gilmore: Syria arms ‘not helpful’

Mr Gilmore said more guns would lead to more casualties, and that EU ministers should focus on a political solution to the crisis.

He said: “I think further militarisation in Syria would certainly not be helpful. The more guns, the more arms that go into Syria, the more casualties there will be.”

Now is the time for wiser heads to prevail. Young Hague has proven to be something of a hothead on this issue alongside his French counterparts. This is a timely intervention by the Irish.
