General Martin Dempsey, US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, gave a lengthy interview to Judy Woodruff on Friday night’s PBS News Hour and delivered a carefully balanced picture of how the U.S. military is managing the unfolding Ukraine crisis, both reassuring European NATO allies that treaty obligations will be honored, while maintaining constant communications with Russian counterparts, to assure there are no miscalculations leading to conflict. Gen. Dempsey, clearly aware of the boundaries between military advice and political decision-making, did not attempt to under-play the danger of conflict, particularly given the occupant of the White House.

The appointed by Verkhovna Rada Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has signed an order to dismiss three deputies of Ukraine’s defense minister as they opposed to giving the Right Sector militants the status of regular military units. A source in the Ukrainian government said this to Itar-Tass. “Yatsenyuk dismissed first deputy defense minister Alexander Oleynik,” the source specified. “Deputies defense minister Vladimir Mozharovskiy and Arturo Francisco Babenko were also dismissed.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a press conference earlier today in Moscow that anyone who thinks of imposing sanctions against his country should think about their consequences. He said, “I think in today’s world, where everything is interconnected and everyone is dependent on one another in this way or another, we can, of course, inflict damage on one another, but his damage will be mutual. They should think about that, too.” Putin was addressing US president Barack Obama without saying so.

How far the blunt  and threatening posture US secretary of state John Kerry took in his interview with the CBS News toward Moscow — and President Vladimir Putin in person — over the Ukraine situation was genuine and how far it was intended to meet the domestic criticism of the Barack Obama administration being ‘weak’ in its foreign policies doesn’t really matter. What matters is that Kerry demanded virtual capitulation by Russia under the shadow of US retribution and that’s being plain dishonest and unrealistic.

BBC makes report about Nazi militants in Kiev

The British Broadcasting Corporation – BBC – said the radical association The Right Sector was the organizer of the most vehement protest rallies in Ukraine. On Saturday, March 1st, it posted a video report from the center of Kiev, where the streets are being patrolled by the militants in the military uniform with the SS symbols, on its website.
