Predictably the EU is pulling back from destroying its relationship with Russia. Whilst Kerry’s rhetoric costs him nothing the Europeans have everything to lose by alienating the only power which can get them out of this mess.

The European Union is unlikely to match the United States in threatening sanctions against Russia when its foreign ministers meet to discuss Ukraine on Monday, instead pushing for mediation between Moscow and Kiev, officials say.
