In his first major speech on education since his election and swearing in as President, a speech made to an unscheduled meeting of the Council of Chief State School officers, held on March 10, 2009 in Washington D.C., Barrack Obama repeated the claims heard from many quarters that the United States must drastically improve student achievement to regain lost international standing in the world.  He called for tying teachers’ pay to student performance (merit pay) and for expanding charter schools throughout the nation.  In calling for merit pay for teachers, Obama argued:

“Too many supporters of my party have resisted the idea of rewarding excellence in teaching with extra pay, even though we know it can make a difference in the classroom.”

US Cities Increasing Use of Armed Mercenaries to Replace Police

From Iraq to the streets of American cities, the deployment of private security forces – including Israeli commandos – to take the place of police officers has spiked significantly and is raising grave concerns. Few areas have seen as dramatic a transformation to privatized services as the world of intelligence and domestic law enforcement. This is an ominous, accelerating trend which thrives on US tax-payer money and prospers in a legal limbo devoid of clear regulatory criteria or accountability mechanisms, leaving the door open for serious abuses. In the words of former CIA division chief and senior analyst Melvin Goodman: “the entire industry is essentially out of control; it’s dangerous!”.

Obama administration uses Blackwater in drone killings

According to a recent report by the New York Times, the Obama administration has retained the services of the notorious Blackwater guards to carry out drone attacks in Afghanistan, denoting no substantive distinction from the Bush administration’s use of Blackwater – now operating under the banner of Xe Services LLC – to carry out ’targeted assassinations’ in Iraq. With the number of military contractors in Afghanistan far exceeding the U.S. soldiers on the ground [*], what has so far been revealed regarding Washington’s arrangements with Blackwater and its more than a dozen affiliate companies might be only the beginning.

The empire and the robots

Havana. August 19, 2009

(Taken from CubaDebate) Granma

A little while ago, I wrote about U.S. plans to impose the absolute superiority of its air force as an instrument of domination over the rest of the world. I mentioned the project of that country possessing more than 1,000 state-of-the-art F-22 and F-35 bombers and fighter planes in its fleet of 2,500 military aircraft. By 20 years later, the totality of its warplanes will be robot-operated. Read the rest of this entry »

Guess What? He’s a Terrible President

19th August, 2009

Both President Obama’s health care plan and his presidency are going down the toilet.

This is well, and right, and just as it should be.

Obama is turning out to be a disastrous president, wholly unsuited for the times and our national and global challenges, and his job approval ratings reflect this.
