The Third Clinton Administration-Changing With Retreads

Counterpunch

21st November, 2008

While the liberal intelligentsia was swooning over Barack Obama during his presidential campaign, I counseled “prepare to be disappointed.” His record as a Illinois state and U.S. Senator, together with the many progressive and long overdue courses of action he opposed during his campaign, rendered such a prediction unfortunate but obvious.

Woolworths Stores Enter Administration, Risking U.K. Jobs

By Howard Mustoe and Louisa Nesbitt

Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) — Woolworths Group Plc appointed administrators for its chain of stores and MFI Retail Ltd. collapsed, putting almost 30,000 U.K. jobs at risk, as the economy’s slide caused consumer spending to slump.

Woolworths, which opened its first shop in 1909, had Deloitte appointed as administrators today after an attempt to sell the stores ended. MFI appointed administrators yesterday.

Retailers are under pressure as a spending slump hits the U.K. The government pledged 20 billion pounds ($30 billion) of loans and tax cuts this week to spur the economy. Home- improvement retailer Kingfisher Plc today said consumer confidence was “shaken,” while DSG International Plc, the largest consumer-electronics retailer in the country, scrapped its dividend. While Some of Us Are Hoping for Change, Others Are Literally Starving for It

By Chris Hedges, Truthdig. Alternet

Elba Figueroa worked as a nurse’s aide until she got Parkinson’s disease. She lost her job. She lost her health care. She receives $703 a month in government assistance. Her rent alone costs $750. And so she borrows money from friends and neighbors every month to stay in her apartment. She laboriously negotiates her wheelchair up and down steps and along the frigid sidewalks of Trenton, N.J., to get to soup kitchens and food pantries to eat. Read the rest of this entry »

Rashid Rauf Murdered

Craig Murray’s Blog

26th november, 2008

There is a highly sensible article in today’s Times by Patrick Mercer MP about the possible death of Rashid Rauf (whose family are denying his demise).

New Labour remains so bent on its simple minded pursuit of a foreign policy based on brute violence, that questions of legality are simply ignored. The Conservatives – in this case Mr Mercer – must again be congratulated for resisting simple populism and standing up for the fabric of legality that must underpin freedom.

Former Cuban president Fidel Castro says al-Qaeda terrorists have been engineered in order to advance the Bush administration’s agenda.

In an essay published on Sunday, Castro said the terrorist group “was born from the empire’s own entrails”, using the term “empire” to refer to the United States.
