Two men arrested in Mumbai attacks-But questions fly after Kashmir police say suspect in cellphone connection is their undercover agent

Posted by seumasach on December 7, 2008

“The implications of Ahmed’s involvement – that Indian agents may have been in touch with the militants and perhaps supplied the SIM cards used in the attacks – added to the list of questions about India’s ill-trained security forces, which are widely blamed for not thwarting the attacks.”

SRINAGAR, India–One of the two Indian men arrested for buying mobile phone cards used by the gunmen in the Mumbai attacks was a counterinsurgency police officer who may have been on an undercover mission, security officials said yesterday in demanding his release.

The arrests, announced in the eastern city of Calcutta, were the first since the bloody siege ended.

The gunmen overpowered and disarmed the security guards, before setting fire to the vehicles, many of which were laden with Humvee armoured cars intended for Western forces.

About three quarters of all the ammunition, food, weapons and other supplies needed by Nato’s troops in Afghanistan, including 8,000 British soldiers, pass through Pakistan. The Taliban have clearly identified this route as a crucial vulnerability.

System in Liquidation Panic

Time To Talk Physical Economy

by John Hoefle

December 6 (LPAC)–The bailout, as presented, is addressing the wrong problem by the wrong methods, and is making the situation worse, not better.

Caught in the grip of an accelerating panic, the financial world is demanding that the world’s central banks and governments turn on the printing presses and flood the system with money, far beyond what they have already done. It’s not working, they scream, so we need more, more, more!

The Disgraceful Sir Michael Wright, A Grovelling Tool of the Police State

Posted by seumasach on December 7, 2008

Craig Murray

3rd December, 2008

One of the features of a transition to a police state is that those who should defend our liberties transfer their allegiance to the executive of the state. Viz the Speaker of the House of Commons and the Serjeant at Arms. Now we have a senior coroner. Sir Michael Wright, coroner in the Jean Charles de Menezes inquiry, who has told the jury they are not permitted to return a verdict of unlawful killing.

Iraqi Parliament Passes Temporary and Conditional Ratification

Posted by seumasach on December 7, 2008

27th November, 2008

This is a rough translation of what the Iraqi parliament has passed today with a very slim majority (144 MPs instead of the constitutionally required two thirds majority 184 MPs). The good news is that this is not over yet. This will make the law valid for the next six months until the Iraqi people vote on it in a national referendum.

Gold at root of new global crisis

RED ALERT: GOLD BACKWARDATION!!!
by Antal E. Fekete,
Gold Standard University Live
December 5, 2008

FinancialSense

December 2, 2008, was a landmark in the saga of the collapsing international monetary system, yet it did not deserve to be reported in the press: gold went to backwardation for the first time ever in history. The facts are as follows: on December 2nd, at the Comex in New York, December gold futures (last delivery: December 31) were quoted at 1.98% discount to spot, while February gold futures (last delivery: February 27, 2009) were quoted at 0.14% discount to spot. (All percentages annualized.) The condition got worse on December 3rd, when the corresponding figures were 2% and 0.29%. This means that the gold basis has turned negative, and the condition of backwardation persisted for at least 48 hours. I am writing this in the wee hours of December 4th, when trading of gold futures has not yet started in New York.

According to the December 3rd Comex delivery report, there are 11,759 notices to take delivery. This represents 1.1759 million ounces of gold, while the Comex-approved warehouses hold 2.9 million ounces. Thus 40% of the total amount will have to be delivered by December 31st. Since not all the gold in the warehouses is available for delivery, Comex supply of gold falls far short of the demand at present rates. Futures markets in gold are breaking down. Paper gold is progressively being discredited. Read the rest of this entry »

Counterpunch

7th December, 2008

On Thursday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper suspended Canada’s parliament to avoid a challenge from opposition parties that were planning to oust him from power. The 3-party coalition — the Liberals, the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois — decided to remove Harper because of his strong opposition to a stimulus package that was designed to minimize the effects of the financial crisis. They also opposed his “proposed elimination of subsidies for political parties, a three-year ban on the right of civil servants to strike, and limits on the ability of women to sue for pay equity.”  Governor General Michaelle Jean helped Harper to hang on by using her constitutional authority to close the legislature for seven weeks. Now the country is in a furor. Read the rest of this entry »

Mandelson rejects euro talk claim

Mandelson rejects euro talk claim

The dominant political parties in the UK have broken silence on the euro. This in typical Orwellian fashion is a non-story. Overtly it says nothing has changed. The whispers in Whitehall are being denied. Yet it appears there is no substantive rejection of the euro other than popular sentiment which is buoyed by the media. The Conservatives have come out with their usual mantra on interest rates. It is hard to tell how much both parties have lost contact with reality but the article may represent a pivotal shift in the way the euro will be reported as the pound sinks
