On Sunday, en route to Astana, Kazakhstan, after a “very nice trip to India”, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told reporters accompanying her, “I just wish I could have stayed longer in India”. New Delhi must be one of a handful of capitals where officials from the George W Bush administration receive an expectant welcome, and the doomsday warnings emitted from New York and Washington do not seem to matter.

Aussies joke – and hope – that China can save capitalism
1 day ago
SYDNEY (AFP) — A cartoon on the front page of Australia’s national newspaper Thursday neatly illustrates an irony admitted by the government: communist China could save capitalism.
The illustration shows a Chinese man in a Superman outfit telling exactly this to a bankrupt, cigar-smoking Wall Street tycoon covering his nakedness in a barrel.
“Oh, you’re just loving this, aren’t you,” the fallen high-flyer replies in the cartoon in The Australian. Read the rest of this entry »

With the reported intra-Afghan talks under the mediation of Saudi Arabia in Mecca on September 24-27, attention inevitably shifts to the hidden aspects of the “war on terror” in Afghanistan – the geopolitics of the war. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who has committed to pulling out Canadian troops from Afghanistan in 2011, let the cat out of the bag last week when he said that some Western leaders wrongly believed North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) troops could stay there forever.

A global downturn in the power of the west
By Dominique Moïsi

It is telling times when the FT prints an article that should appear in the Socialist Worker, with a few changes in jargon and an outlook that actually assesses Western power and not just capitalist crises. As to Europe, the author, here, is rather one sided: have a look at our Editorial.
It is not too early to assess the first geopolitical lessons of the current financial maelstrom. As the crisis unfolds, trends are emerging. The near collapse of financial capitalism both confirms and accelerates a revolution that was already under way in international politics. Who are the losers and who are likely to be the winners – that is, those who lose the least – in the present mess? In the language of Wall Street, the west is down and the state is up. Moreover, democracy itself risks falling into disrepute if solutions are not found to the crisis. Read the rest of this entry »
