A new paradigm for a post-imperial world

Archive for the ‘Multipolar world’ Category

The New World Order is not turning out as planned. Instead of all power emanating from London and Washington, new power centres are emerging to the South and East: a new global equilibrium raises the possibility of a new post-imperial age of peace and equality between nations.

The citadel of the West in the post-Soviet space is falling — Georgia. A sad epilogue is being written to the epic story of the “color revolution”. The results of the Georgian parliamentary election on Monday have brought the stunning news that President Mikhail Saakashvilli has suffered a veritable rout. MS was brought to power by a carefully-plotted drama of “regime change” in 2003 known popularly in the western lexicon as the Rose Revolution.

Wanting Chinese investment is one thing; needing it is another. As the euro-zone crisis has deepened, one of the counter-intuitive outcomes thus far has been the increased investment by Chinese companies and the central government into European assets. The Rhodium Group, a New York-based research firm that tracks outbound Chinese investment into North America and Europe, published a study this month that showed how significant this increased investment has been.

7th September, 2012

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s trip to China highlighted the challenges inherent in the world’s most important bilateral relationship. There are now serious areas of contention between China and the United States. It wouldn’t have been difficult at all for the Washington Post reporter to get the apt quotations to embellish his highly critical piece on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. What matters is the overall disenchantment of the American media with the PM. First, Time magazine; now WaPo.

The meeting of the China-Eurasian Forum in Urumqi, Xinjiang, on Sunday makes an interesting move in regional cooperation on the part of Beijing. The presence of Premier Wen Jiabao at the meeting signified the high importance that Beijing attaches to this initiative. In sum, China is directly wooing its Eurasian allies with audacious offers of building a New Silk Road.

The initiative obviously aims at integrating Xinjiang with the western market. There was high-scale participation in the event by the Central Asian countries. Surprisingly, Russia wasn’t represented at the political level at the event.

Not a single Indian journalist, it seems, bothered to cover the meeting of the trade ministers of the 10 ASEAN countries and six partners (China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand) in Cambodia on Thursday. The Indian press corps instead headed westward — to Tehran, which is probably more sexy than Siem Reap.

Egypt and Iran this week took a giant step toward overcoming their diplomatic estrangement, brought together by the exigencies of a global movement and, even more so, a complex regional calculus that has a long history of being shaped by foreign powers.

You’d better not mess with Muslim Brother Morsi.

Straight out of “communist” China – where he secured a red carpet welcome from President Hu Jintao and vice-president Xi Jinping – the Egyptian president lands in “evil” Iran as a true Arab world leader. [1]
