Russia hopes that the European states will refrain from launching a military intervention in Syria, says Moscow’s envoy to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov.
“I sincerely hope that the European, as well as other countries’ leaders will manage to keep cool and bereasonable enough to avoid the dangerous path of escalation of tensions, or, especially, an armedintervention,” Chizhov said during a Moscow-Brussels videoconference on Thursday.

There are other possible motivations for this kind of terrorism apart from that of provoking a full-scale war. Most obviously, NATO fears the shift in French foreign policy following the election of Francois Hollande and wish to constrain him within the Atlanticist framework laid down by Sarkozy.

Hague’s call for Russia to resolve the crisis is an interesting one. Russia don’t share Hague’s line that Assad is behind these killings and suggest that Al Qaeda type elements are more likely responsible. The UN report hints that the massacre is connected to government bombardment but that doesn’t seem consistent with the injuries sustained. Russia doesn’t support Britain’s regime change agenda and is definitely not soft on Al Qaeda.
“It isn’t in the interests of Russia, it’s not in anyone’s interests, for Syria to descend into an even bloodier situation and into a full-scale civil war and that’s now the danger.”
If this is a threat designed to force Russia into removing Assad I suggest it is a futile one.

“We should hold all the responsible ones accountable and have them face justice even if it has connection to some permanent members at the UN Security Council,” he added. “Those who are very interested in halting violence and making the comprehensive national dialogue in Syria a success should stop interfering in our internal affairs and should stop arming , hosting, funding and protecting the armed terrorist groups in my country,” said al-Jaafari, adding that “No one can ignite fire and be the firefighter at the same time and, unfortunately, this is the case for many UNSC member states.”
